Cataloging Video Resources with RDA Workshop

A two-part workshop running 75 minutes each session on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 2:30pm Eastern/1:30 Central/12:30 Mountain/11:30am Pacific and Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 2:30pm Eastern/1:30 Central/12:30 Mountain/11:30am Pacific

As the cataloging universe moves ever deeper into the era of RDA: Resource Description and Access, specialist catalogers need information on managing the materials in their areas of responsibility. If you work with videos or any type of moving images and you want to stay current, you need to know how RDA addresses cataloging for these resources. In this two-part workshop, multimedia cataloging expert Kelley McGrath will provide an overview of cataloging moving image materials using RDA with an emphasis on areas that can be problematic for moving images, including sources of information, statements of responsibility, relationship designators, publisher and dates, and various technical elements related to carrier.

This webinar will provide guidance on cataloging film and video using RDA, and will assume a basic familiarity with RDA. McGrath will focus on describing the unique aspects of moving image resources and the unique challenge they pose for catalogers. These include the need for technology to access the content, the ever-changing nature of that technology, and the numerous technical details that affect the usability of a resource for patrons.

Learning Outcomes

After participating in this event, you will:

  • Understand the scope of moving image content
  • Be able to identify and record relevant aspects of moving image carriers and their technological features and constraints
  • Be familiar with the type of information found on moving image manifestations, how it is usually presented and how to record it
  • Be aware of the types of people and corporate bodies and associated with moving images
  • Know how to apply common relationship designators and construct preferred access points
