Cappadonia, Patterson Win Friends of ALSC Mini Institute Scholarships

The have awarded scholarships to the ALSC Mini Institute in Atlanta to Keturah Cappadonia and Julie Patterson. These scholarships were awarded in efforts to support ALSC’s goal of continuing education for children’s librarians The scholarships include Mini Institute registration and lodging travel stipend. The ALSC Mini Institute is a one-day event taking place on Friday, January 20, 2017.

Cappadonia and Patterson were chosen from a pool of more than 30 well-qualified applicants. Criteria for selection included commitment to children’s library services and to ALSC; leadership qualities as displayed through library and community involvement; need for professional development and desired outcome for attending the ALSC Mini Institute; financial need for scholarship, personally and professionally; and well-roundedness of the applicant. Applications were reviewed by an ALSC Board sub-committee consisting of current Board members.

Keturah Cappadonia is Head of Children’s Services at the David Howe Public Library in Wellsville, N.Y. She is an active member of the New York Library Association and the Southern Tier Library System Youth Services Steering Committee. She is excited about attending the Mini Institute where she hopes to learn more about outreach and programming for children services.

"My commitment to children's librarianship is one which brings me much joy and satisfaction and which allows me to bring the same feelings to others," said Cappadonia. "I am extremely fortunate to be able to see children reading and enjoying books and library programs every day."

Julie Patterson is the Teacher Librarian at the Ascend International School in Mumbai, India. Patterson is currently a member of the 91´«Ã½ Committee on Education. She is also a member of Washington Library Association and the Northwest Association of Independent School Librarians Conference Planning Committee. Patterson hopes to use the scholarship to help her Indian students discover how much reading and information literacy can change their lives.

"Living and working in India for much of the year makes my time at the ALSC Mini Institute so precious," said Patterson. "Hopefully, the Institute will fill me with new ideas and allow me to continue to be a resource to teachers and fellow librarians in my community."

Registration for the ALSC Mini Institute is open and can be purchased as a ticketed event through 91´«Ã½'s Midwinter Meeting registration site.
