Cartographic Resources Cataloging for Beginners Workshop
A 90-minute workshop, Wednesday, July 6, 2016, 2:30pm Eastern/1:30 Central/12:30 Mountain/11:30am Pacific
Map cataloging is an important skill for many types of librarianship. But with so many training resources available, it’s difficult to know how to begin. In this workshop, experienced cataloger Susan M. Moore will cover the basics of cataloging sheet maps while focusing primarily on the areas of a catalog record that are of particular concern to cartographic resources, including scale and other mathematical data, title selection, and measurement.
Because the cataloging of special format materials often receives superficial treatment, Moore will pay special attention to the essentials of creating a bibliographic record for a sheet map. She’ll discuss key considerations such as selecting a title, calculating scale, recording coordinates, measuring maps, and filling out the 336, 337, and 338 MARC fields. You will walk away from this workshop with a solid foundation on which to build your cataloging judgment and determine how to provide necessary information in bibliographic records. Register today to get started with map cataloging!
After participating in this workshop, you’ll be able to:
- Correctly select the title of a map
- Determine the scale and coordinates of a map and record them accurately
- Obtain a listing of the common 336, 337, and 338 data elements for maps
