Editions Workshop Press Release

CHICAGO—91ý Editions announces an exciting new workshop, with Jessica Jupitus. This workshop will last 90 minutes and take place at 2:30pm Eastern/1:30 Central/12:30 Mountain/11:30am Pacific on Wednesday, August 3, 2016.

Alt+library: Programming for 20s and 30s Workshop

As your library evolves and becomes more future-oriented, you start thinking about ways you can ensure your longevity by offering unique, valuable, and intriguing services to your entire community. This includes young professionals, the “missing population” of patrons between college-aged individuals and senior citizens. In this workshop, you’ll discover more experimental and unusual programs for these patrons that will get them reinvested in your library—like the one they loved in high school!

Jupitus will share her six years of alt+library programming—the ins and outs, background, how-tos, successes and failures—to help you create longevity in your library.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Program suggestions and ideas that you can implement today
  • Learn from Jupitus' successes and failures on alt+library programs
  • Best practices to plan and run these programs
  • Marketing how-tos including social media, alternative materials, and program titles
  • Information on “why to offer this” and “how to persuade administrators”
  • Community partnerships and local tie-ins

About the Instructor(s)

Jessica Jupitus is a central library manager in Sacramento and a skater/coach for the Sac City Roller—“Lipstick Librarian.” Her obsession with fitness, roller derby, and cool library programming has led to the creation of non-traditional programs like Punk Rock Aerobics and Heavy Metal Yoga. Jessica won the 91ý/Scholastic “@ your library” grant in 2012 with a week-long suite of LGBTQIA programming and has been committed to offering programming like Rainbow Family storytime and collaborative opportunities like the Q Prom with the local LGBT Center. In 2014, she was the recipient of a “Pride Award” for her work with the community and also named a Mover and Shaker.
