New workshop on Letting Go of Legacy Services: Weeding Materials and Programs

91´«Ã½

CHICAGO — 91´«Ã½ Publishing eLearning announces a new workshop, with Mary Evangeliste, Suzanne Ward, and Katherine Furlong. This workshop will last 90 minutes and is hosted live at 2:30 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016.

Most library administrators are worried about the bottom line and how to use their limited budget to best serve their patrons and users. Rightsizing, sun-setting or planned abandonment strategies can be used to examine your current services and resources so that you can know what to hold on to and what you can part with.

Ask yourself: Is your institution’s library bursting at the seams with books that have not been touched for decades? Or microfilm that nobody uses? How about print journals that have been superseded by electronic access? Now is the time to take a clear-sighted look at your library’s services and resources, and let go of programs that have lost their effectiveness over time.

In this workshop, Evangeliste, Ward, and Furlong will present proven strategies and case studies to show how libraries can sunset services and resources in a sane and sensible manner using data and user input. You will walk away with an understanding of how to figure out what you should cut.

After participating in this workshop, you will have:

  • acquire new strategies to examine and assess your current services and resources;
  • use qualitative and quantitative data collection methodologies to assess your programs, resources, and services;
  • know how to formulate communication plans to prepare your internal and external audiences for changes in services and resources.
