CHICAGO — 91´«Ã½ Publishing, in collaboration with the San Jose State University School of Information (SJSU iSchool), is offering the returning popular 12-week , facilitated by Dr. Sylvia Hall-Ellis, beginning on June 1, 2015.

New to cataloging? The ability to catalog proficiently can be a valuable skill for every librarian, but proper training is essential. Introducing the Cataloging for Non-Catalogers Advanced eCourse, a fully online course designed for individuals who have never cataloged before.

Starting with the fundamentals, you will learn about different cataloging schemes, different types of records and different tools. Building upon the basics, you will then develop an understanding of how to catalog different types and formats of library materials. To show off your newly acquired cataloging skills, you will wrap up the course with several weeks of hands-on exercises building records for materials under Hall-Ellis’ guidance.

This advanced eCourse is ideal for individuals who have had cataloging added to their job responsibilities, for those who want to broaden their professional skill set and for institutions and organizations that need more non-expert staff proficient at hands-on cataloging. Get the training you need to start cataloging.

Through your participation in this course, you will:

  • learn the core concepts and terms that govern the field of cataloging with an emphasis on working in an online environment;
  • learn how bibliographic description works, including the basics of different cataloging standards and different bibliographic formats;
  • gain a thorough understanding of how authority control and subject access work;
  • learn how to use the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme and the Library of Congress Classification Scheme;
  • learn how to catalog materials in a variety of formats and subject areas.

Participants who complete this advanced eCourse will receive a SJSU iSchool/91´«Ã½ Publishing Advanced Certificate of Completion. This certificate will affirm your status as having completed all the steps of an advanced eCourse on Cataloging for Non-Catalogers and will provide proof of your participation that you can add to your resume.

The course will be delivered entirely online with coursework completed asynchronously. Within the week-by-week format, students will be able to work at their own pace and interact with Hall-Ellis and fellow students through emails and message boards without the constraints of attending a live session at a specific time. Sylvia D. Hall-Ellis is associate professor in the Morgridge College of Education at the University of Denver and an adjunct faculty member for the SJSU iSchool. She received her PhD in Library and Information Science from University of Pittsburgh and her MLS at the University of North Texas. She has served as chair of the ALCTS Committee on the Recruitment, Training, and Education of Catalogers (2006-07) and is currently serving as a member of the 91´«Ã½ Committee for Research and Statistics. She served as fundraising chair for REFORMA. She has authored technical reports, three monographs and many articles focused on research interests, including competencies for catalog and technical services librarians, library and information science education, RDA and services to diverse populations.
