Improve your teaching with strategies from Decoding the Disciplines model in new workshop

91ý

CHICAGO — 91ý Publishing eLearning announces a new workshop, , with Andrea Patricia Baer. This workshop will last 90 minutes and is hosted live at 2:30 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015.

Do your students get bogged down during information literacy learning sessions? In this workshop, you’ll improve your teaching with strategies from the Decoding the Disciplines model and threshold concepts from the new ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (approved in February 2015).

When students are new to a field, they sometimes find themselves getting stuck. In this Decoding the Disciplines model, this situation is called “bottleneck” and is also referred to as a “threshold concept”– a term embraced by the ACRL Framework. Andrea Baer will teach you about these concepts and how to incorporate them into your teaching to help you explore a new way of thinking when it comes to information literacy. She’ll also discuss how to implement these concepts to encourage your students to learn and practice the discipline’s ways of thinking, in this case, about research more effectively.

Baer will present the ACRL Framework from a new angle, connecting its abstract and theoretical qualities to practical and effective teaching strategies that you can easily implement in your information literacy lessons.

In this workshop, you'll learn to:

  • recognize commonalities between Decoding’s concept “bottlenecks of learning” and the ACRL Framework’s threshold concepts in order to explore ways that they may complement one another;
  • identify steps in the Decoding the Disciplines process that may facilitate individual or collaborative instructional planning;
  • reflect on effective language for opening conversations with fellow educators about approaches or concepts addressed in the ACRL Framework.

She holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Washington and a Masters in Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee.
