Be on the cutting edge of cataloging music with new workshop

CHICAGO — 91´«Ã½ Publishing eLearning, in partnership with Music Library Association, announces a new workshop with Nancy Lorimer, Casey Mullin and Hermine Vermeij. This workshop will last 90 minutes and takes place at 2:30 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015. This workshop will introduce you to two new Library of Congress vocabularies that were recently released:

  • The Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT)
  • The music portion of the Library of Congress Genre/Form Thesaurus (LCGFT)

LCMPT and LCGFT represent a new chapter in access to music materials via library information systems. Lorimer, Mullin and Vermeij will give an overview of these new terms, cover best practices for their use and examples of cataloging with the genre/form and medium of performance access.

In this workshop, you’ll learn about topics such as:

  • Definition of genre/form
  • Music genre/form terms in LCSH
  • The structure of LCGFT and LCMPT and individual terms
  • Searching LCGFT and LCMPT
  • An exploration of the music terms
  • Using LCGFT and LCMPT terms for music in bibliographic records
  • The interaction of music genre/form terms with demographic, subject, and medium of performance terms
  • Music Library Association's Best Practices
  • Ongoing work & new submissions

About the Instructors

Nancy Lorimer holds an MLIS and BMus in Music History from Western University and a MMus in Musicology from the University of Edinburgh. She is the current chair of the MLA Music Genre/Form Task Force and the SACO Music Funnel Coordinator and was also active in the development of the Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus (LCMPT) as a member of MLA’s Subject Access Subcommittee. She is currently a member of the RBMS Bibliographic Standards Committee and represents Music on the Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials RDA task force.

Casey Mullin holds an MLS from Indiana University-Bloomington and a BMus in viola performance from Western Washington University. He is currently chair of the MLA Vocabularies Subcommittee and serves on the Genre/Form Task Force. His work in these endeavors has included contributions to the music portion of the Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT), the Library of Congress Thesaurus of Medium of Performance Terms (LCMPT) and the best practices documents for both thesauri. He also serves as the Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect of the Music OCLC Users Group. He is a music cataloger for the New York Public Library.

Hermine Vermeij holds an MLIS from UCLA and a BA in Music from UC Santa Cruz. She has been active in genre/form projects within both MLA and 91´«Ã½ and was chair of the MLA Subject Access Subcommittee during the development of the Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus (LCMPT). She is the team leader of the Subject Specialist Catalogers at UCLA, where she catalogs material for the Music Library as well as social sciences monographs in German, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Icelandic and Tagalog.
