Michael Beller receives Carnegie Corporation of New York/

New York Times I Love My Librarian Award

NEW YORK — Today, Michael Beller, head of reference and access services librarian at F.W. Olin Library, Mills College in Oakland, Calif., will receive the Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award for his outstanding public service to the community and ongoing commitment to changing lives through education. Beller is one of only 10 librarians within the United States recognized this year for this esteemed honor.

Beller serves as an exemplary ambassador for the library, whether he is sporting one of his 50 bowties, dancing to the tune of “Happy” in the library stacks for a student video or introducing service dogs to the library lounge during finals and other stressful periods in students’ lives.

Beller teaches such courses as Letters 101, Library Resources and Methods, which introduce students to library research and the use of printed works and electronic databases.

In teaching research, he uses creative examples. In one case, when examining the history of polka dots through the use of the library’s subscription databases, he captured the attention of students by wearing a polka dot shirt and tie. Also, Beller provides invaluable assistance to students learning how to perform research on such topics 19^th century woman writers to teachers scrambling to reserve classroom materials or ebooks or needing syllabus entries hyperlinked to articles in their databases.

Beller will receive a $5,000 prize at an award ceremony and reception held this evening in New York City, hosted by The New York Times.

As part of the award process, library users nominate librarians in public, school, college, community and university libraries. This year more than 1,000 library patrons submitted detailed stories regarding how their librarian had an impact on their communities and lives.

There are a total of 165,986 certified librarians in the United States and more than 200,000 dedicated library workers who connect people with the information access and critical resources they need to support lifelong learning.
