New York Times I Love My Librarian Award
NEW YORK — Today, Jessica Elaine Holmes, librarian at Westridge Elementary School Library Media Center in Frankfort, Ky., will receive the Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award for her outstanding public service to the community and ongoing commitment to changing lives through education. Holmes is one of only 10 librarians within the United States recognized this year for this esteemed honor.
Holmes has had a major impact on student learning and also transformed an outdated school library into a hub for school activities.
Holmes inherited a library that was only minimally used by students and staff. In less than one year, she has transformed the library into a warm and inviting place for everyone in the school.
Holmes promotes reading by directing the Battle of the Books competition for fourth- and fifth-grade students and coordinating such reading incentive programs as Pizza Hut Book It! and Lexington Legend’s Hit The Books. She also assists students in Book Fest, a literature-based program for gifted and talented students.
Holmes fosters a love of technology among students. She directs the Student Technology Leadership Program. Under the direction of Holmes, students discover new technologies and mediums. For example, she worked with students on a feature film which placed third in a state competition and recommends new software’s that enhance projects such as animation software Powtoon opposed to PowerPoint.
As part of the award process, library users nominate librarians in public, school, college, community college and university libraries. This year more than 1,000 library patrons submitted detailed stories regarding how their librarian had an impact on their communities and lives.
Holmes will receive a $5,000 prize at an award ceremony and reception held this evening in New York City, hosted by The New York Times.
There are a total of 165,986 certified librarians in the United States and more than 200,000 dedicated library workers who connect people with the information access and critical resources they need to support lifelong learning.
