Explore outreach services at Annual Conference

CHICAGO – Join the 91´«Ã½ Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) for two panel discussions on providing library services to underserved and underrepresented populations at the 2014 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference in Las Vegas. Both panels will take place from 8:30 - 10 a.m. and 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 29 in room N235 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
These two panel discussions will highlight library outreach areas that OLOS promotes along with its affiliates and related stakeholder groups and feature experts from the field of library outreach.
The first panel will feature library services to people of color, bookmobile communities and incarcerated people and ex-offenders. Panelists will include Andrew Jackson with the Black Caucus of the 91´«Ã½; Lisa Zhao with the Chinese American Librarians Association; Marianne Thompson and Eletha Davis with the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services; and Velva Hampson, California Department of Corrections and Erin Boyington, Colorado Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation who will discuss issues pertaining to librarianship in state prisons and corrections departments.
The second panel will continue the conversation of library services to incarcerated people and ex-offenders and highlight issues pertaining to serving homeless youth, including LGBTQ youth. Featured presenters will include Margo Fesperman, Mecklenburg County (N.C) Sheriff’s Office; Kathrina Litchfield, University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science; Dr. Julie Winkelstein, University of Tennessee-Knoxville; and Carrie Banks, Brooklyn Public Library.

The Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) serves the Association by identifying and promoting library services that support equitable access to the knowledge and information stored in our libraries. OLOS focuses attention on services that are inclusive of traditionally underserved populations, including new and non-readers, people geographically isolated, people with disabilities, rural and urban poor people, and people generally discriminated against based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, language and social class.
