LITA webinar: 'Games in Libraries for Outreach and Instruction'

CHICAGO — A panel of library games experts will discuss the principles of gamification and how to use game elements for information literacy instruction. The process of creating a library game and using game design best practices will be considered. Creating physical games based on literature for outreach purposes will also be examined. Attendees will leave with innovative ideas of how to use games or gamification in their own libraries.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will gain the following skills:

  • The ability to incorporate gamification into library instruction sessions
  • Knowing when to create a library game and use game design best practices
  • Using literature based physical games for outreach purposes

Instructors

Andrew Battista

Andrew Battista is an information literacy and reference librarian at the University of Montevallo. His research interests include games-based learning, information literacy and social justice and multimodal composition.

Mary J. Snyder Broussard

Mary Broussard is an instructional services librarian at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa. Her research interests and projects with game-based learning in academic libraries have led to a number of national conference presentations and publications.

Cecilia Sirigos

Cecilia Sirigos is a reference and instruction librarian at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Her interests include gaming curricula, as well as film exhibition and preservation. She has her MLIS from the University of South Carolina and post-graduate certificates from Charles Sturt University and (Summer 2014) the University of Illinois, Chicago.

Heath Ward

Heath Ward is the teen services librarian/reference librarian at the Pickens County Public Library System in South Carolina. He collaborated with other authors and wrote a chapter in "Games in Libraries: Essays on Using Play to Connect and Instruct," published by McFarland. Also, he has presented at various local conferences.

Breanne Kirsch

Breanne Kirsch is a public services librarian at the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg. She is the founder and current chair of the LITA Game Making Interest Group. She is the editor of "Games in Libraries: Essays on Using Play to Connect and Instruct," published by McFarland. She has presented on games in libraries during past 91´«Ã½ conferences, a HandHeld Librarian conference and various local conferences.
