CHICAGO — Celebrate the 5th annual , starting Sunday, April 27 through Saturday, May 3. This national awareness campaign, a presentation of the (ALCTS), was developed to promote the understanding and importance of care for personal and community cultural heritage collections, whether they be books, documents, photographs, textiles, paintings, sculptures, furniture and decorative arts or whatever any person or community collects.

Libraries are the perfect place to share preservation information and libraries across the U.S. and beyond will celebrate Preservation Week with:

• scanning snapshots and memories in Michigan;
• special care for military collectibles in Hawaii;
• Ethiopic illuminated manuscript at Brown University;
• screenings of a restored 1914 film, "The Boy Mayor," in Oregon;
• photos from daguerreotype to digital in Hong Kong;
• microbes and digitization at University of British Columbia and;
• eight separate events at New York Public library, their largest offering of Preservation Week events to date.

Always a popular part of Preservation Week are the free webinars. This year, there are two webinars available:

• (Tuesday, April 29). Presented by Karen E. K. Brown, preservation librarian for the University at Albany, SUNY University Libraries. What can we do to protect our collectables from damage even if we don’t think we have a perfect place to keep them? Learn about possible risks from handling and the environment, and practical, inexpensive ideas to keep collections safe to help ensure what you have can be shared for many years to come. • (Thursday, May 1). Presented by Melissa Tedone, conservator at Iowa State University Library. Scrapbooks can be challenging to preserve since they often contain a diversity of materials. Learn about common problems with long-term preservation of scrapbooks and identify the most stable materials and bindings for new scrapbooks.
