CHICAGO — The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services () congratulates Les Hawkins on receiving the 2014 Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award. Presented by the Continuing Resources Section (CRS) of ALCTS, this award, consisting of a citation and $1,500 donated by ProQuest through its business unit, is given for distinguished contributions to serials librarianship. The award will be presented at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony on Saturday, June 28, during the 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

Les Hawkins, coordinator, Library of Congress, receives this award for his many achievements in and significant influence on the field of continuing resources. An acknowledged and well-respected leader, Hawkins builds and fosters connections and enthusiastically supports serials standards, education and innovation. His active encouragement of collaboration between the serials community and the larger library profession results in gains for all involved and raises the profile of serials librarianship as a vital and necessary part of the larger bibliographic universe. Hawkins takes leadership roles in professional organizations and conferences, including 91´«Ã½ and the North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG), and is a regular contributor to the serials literature. He is a learned and authoritative source for all things CONSER.

Hawkins’ key contributions are in the development and advancement of serials training and documentation; his role in launching the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP); supporting, presenting and developing live online training sessions and paving the way for CONSER’s acceptance of and preparation for the first new cataloging code in 30 years (RDA). He facilitated bridge training (bridging between AACR2 and RDA) for serials catalogers conversant with serials cataloging. He facilitated peer review for CONSER catalogers allowing them to put their new RDA training into practice.

He is known for his ability to build consensus and maintain unity among the serials cataloging community. Hawkins coordinated a wide-scale effort to completely revise the CONSER Cataloging Manual (CCM). The CCM is both a compilation of serials cataloging best practices and a guide to decision making in situations of uncertainty. Hawkins created a collaborative workspace and provided software training sessions for the catalogers involved in the project.

Hawkins maintains a strong track record of publication in two of the most well-known journals in the continuing resources community, Serials Librarian and Serials Review. He regularly authors and co-authors articles on timely serials cataloging-related topics, most recently on RDA serials workflow and provider-neutral e-resource guidelines in RDA for serials.
