CHICAGO – Attendees will learn the power of persuasion and the principles of project-based learning at preconferences offered by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) before the 2014 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½) Annual Conference. Half-day workshops “The Power of Persuasion: Developing Influence to Become Your Own Best Advocate” and “The PBL Way: Partnerships, Pedagogy and Purpose” will be offered on Friday, June 27, in Las Vegas. In “The Power of Persuasion: Developing Influence to Become Your Own Best Advocate,” presenter Ken Haycock will share the principles of being successful in any situation. Haycock has identified six principles for persuasion through interviews of more than 200 administrators, politicians and lobbyists; examination of decisions made in difficult financial times; and observation of school librarian and school administrator interactions. Through examples, Haycock will share why some school library programs are better supported than others.

Presenters Rhonda Huisman, John Hochstetler and Renee Isom break down project-based learning (PBL) during the preconference “The PBL Way: Partnerships, Pedagogy and Purpose.” Huisman, Hotchstetler and Isom will walk participants through the basics of project-based learning and how it can be tied to the Common Core State Standards and 21st century learning skills. The presenters will share strategies to demonstrate the school librarian’s role in PBL through instructional partnership to ensure success for K-12 students and educators.
