CHICAGO — The 91´«Ã½ Public Programs Office (PPO) and the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) are pleased to announce two free online learning opportunities for public and youth/young adult service librarians. Entitled “Marvel Moon,” the online sessions will acquaint audiences with NASA's investigations into the ongoing saga that has shaped our Moon. Registration for both online sessions is required.
“Marvel Moon I,” the first of the free online sessions, will explore the science behind Earth’s Moon—delving into our Moon’s story and the geologic processes that made it look the way it does today. This session will be held at 2 p.m. CST on Monday, Feb. 24 – to register, visit: .
“Marvel Moon II” will explore cultural connections to the Moon and how the Moon affects our everyday lives, and will take place at 2 p.m. CST on Monday, March 10. To register for Marvel Moon II, visit: .
Both sessions will be presented by Andy Shaner of the . Shaner leads both lunar and Mars education efforts for the LPI, including the Exploration of the Moon and Asteroids by Secondary Students program and Education/Public Outreach for the ChemCam instrument onboard NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity. He also actively helps in the planning and implementation of trainings for the LPI Explore library program.
The Lunar and Planetary Institute, a division of the Universities Space Research Association, is an intellectual leader in lunar and planetary science. The Institute 1) serves as a scientific forum attracting world-class visiting scientists, postdoctoral fellows, students, and resident experts; 2) supports and serves the research community through newsletters, meetings, and other activities; 3) collects and disseminates planetary data while facilitating the community's access to NASA science; and 4) engages, excites, and educates the public about space science and invests in the development of future generations of explorers.
The 91´«Ã½ Public Programs Office promotes cultural and community programming as an essential part of library service in all types and sizes of libraries. Successful library programming initiatives have included Let’s Talk About It reading and discussion series, traveling exhibitions, film discussion programs, the Great Stories CLUB, LIVE! @ your library and more.
