CHICAGO — 91´«Ã½ Editions announces an exciting new workshop, with Catherine Hakala-Ausperk. This workshop will consist of two 90-minute sessions and take place from 2:30 p.m. Eastern/1:30 p.m. Central on Wednesdays, April 16 and 23, 2014.

If you want a great library, you need a great staff. In this two-part workshop, Cathy Hakala-Ausperk—a librarian, speaker, consultant and expert on library staff development—will show you how you can build an excellent staff and improve staff efficiency. Whether you’re bringing on new staff members or looking to find new directions with your existing employees, this workshop will give you a practical, step-by-step approach to building a skilled team.

The first session will focus on how to build your team by hiring the right people in the right way. It will cover position analysis, using a Hiring Team, advertising, reviewing applicants and interviewing. This second installment will focus on everything from orientation to training, challenging, correcting, and inspiring your team members to improve and excel.

Topics Include:

  • managing staff across different age groups and skill sets;
  • improving communication between team members;
  • mentoring other staff members;
  • Keeping your team organized in a culture of change.

About the Instructor

Catherine Hakala-Ausperk is executive director of the Northeast Ohio Regional Library System as well as a library consultant and trainer through her firm Libraries Thrive (). A frequent speaker at national and state conferences, staff days and workshops, she has a passion for supporting, coaching, and developing successful library staff, including bosses. A 29-year public library veteran, she is also an adjunct faculty member of Kent State University’s School of Library and Information Science. She is the author of two books: "Be a Great Boss: One Year to Success" (91´«Ã½ Editions, 2011) and "Build a Great Team: One Year to Success" (91´«Ã½ Editions, 2013). Hakala-Ausperk is a Certified Public Library Administrator (CPLA).
