ASCLA calls for webinar and online course proposals

CHICAGO — The Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) invites subject matter experts and experienced librarians with knowledge to share to submit proposals for ASCLA webinars to be presented in October 2014 through August 2015 as a part of ASCLA’s outstanding online learning offerings.

Proposals may be submitted using the or . Proposals must be submitted by Sept. 1, 2014 for presentation October 2014 through August 2015. Online Courses and Webinars submitted during this open call period will be reviewed and approved by Sept. 15, 2014. , including webinars and courses.

Presenters for accepted proposals are compensated for their work and will receive training and support on ASCLA’s online presentation software. Questions about ASCLA’s webinar offerings and proposals can be sent to Andrea Hill, ASCLA web manager, at ahill@ala.org.@ala.org

Successful proposals will:

  • show plans for presentations that are 60-75 minutes in length;
  • identify clear learning outcomes for the session;
  • show how the presentation addresses a topic either of interest to ASCLA members, or represents an area of ASCLA’s expertise that benefits other types of libraries and librarians.

Proposal topics for courses and webinars may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • ADA updates for libraries;
  • assessing accessibility knowledge;
  • benchmarking and evaluation measures;
  • correctional librarianship 101: covering the basics of a good prison/jail library;
  • designing effective surveys;
  • E-books;
  • emerging technologies for those with special needs, including apps and iPads;
  • evaluating and improving cooperative services;
  • future trends in library service;
  • grantwriting basics;
  • group purchasing basics;
  • how to be a futurist;
  • how to hire a library consultant;
  • innovations in library service;
  • innovative services for an aging population;
  • law librarianship for correctional librarians;
  • library users with learning disabilities and how to help them;
  • marketing library services to special needs populations;
  • marketing on a shoestring budget;
  • medical librarians: best practices;
  • outreach to visually or physically handicapped populations: best practices;
  • prison library programming;
  • providing library services to refugees;
  • role of the state library in today’s economy;
  • services to library patrons with cognitive or mental impairments;
  • standards and best practices for individuals on the autism spectrum;
  • technology trends for special needs populations;
  • training for library users who use screen readers;
  • utilizing focus groups to prioritize services to the disabled.

ASCLA online CE offerings are an opportunity for librarians to infuse their year with professional development they can conveniently—and affordably—pursue from the comfort of their home or office. Webinars and courses will take place October 2014 through August 2015 and will cover topics relevant to a broad range of librarians, library agencies, library staff and library advocates
