CHICAGO — ALCTS is offering "MOOCs and the Public Library: An Opportunity," a webinar on Feb. 26. Presenter, Dorothy Pawlowski will discuss opportunities for public libraries to promote lifelong learning by becoming meet-up destinations for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). This webinar is based on the experience of the Ridgefield (Conn.) Library, which hosted a 10-week literature-based MOOC.

Dorothy Pawlowski is adult services librarian at the Ridgefield Library. Her article “MOOCing at the Public Library” appeared in the December 2013 issue of Library Journal.

This webinar is the first of the ALCTS MOOCs Spring Series that features librarians and scholars from public and academic libraries reporting on the latest research about MOOCs and offering practical information on creating and presenting MOOCs. The series will appeal to librarians in academic, public and special libraries. Presenters will discuss the role libraries play in the development of MOOCs and share information that will enable attendees to familiarize themselves with the steps involved in developing a MOOC.

On March 26, Curtis L. Kendrick and Irene Gashurov will look at how librarians can shape the conversation about changes created by MOOCs.

On May 21, Rebecca Griffith will look at new research on opportunities and challenges associated with using third-party MOOCs in campus-based services.

On June 4, Sarah Bardac will look at the roles, opportunities and pitfalls of MOOCs.
