CHICAGO — 91´«Ã½ Editions announces a new facilitated eCourse . Nicole Pagowsky and Erica DeFrain will serve as the instructors for this four-week facilitated eCourse, which starts on Sept. 15, 2014.
In this eCourse, instructional librarians Pagowsky and DeFrain will provide you with a foundation in instructional design. Whether you present face-to-face workshops or develop online tutorials, this course will help you hone your teaching skills and prepare you for your instructional needs. During the course, you will complete an instructional design plan for one of your upcoming workshops, courses or tutorials and will receive feedback on it from the instructors and fellow participants.
After participating in this eCourse, you will be able to:
- identify major principles of instructional design to apply to your teaching;
- incorporate appropriate learning theories into your instructional materials to reach learners effectively;
- develop an assessment plan appropriate for the instructional objectives to link goals, assessment and feedback with the overall instructional design of your course or workshop;
- select and effectively integrate appropriately matched technologies and teaching tools to enhance your instruction and students’ learning;
- become familiar with critical information literacy pedagogical practices in order to create an inclusive classroom atmosphere and engender awareness of all students.
eCourse outline
Week 1: Introduction and Instructional Design Models
- What is instructional design? Its benefits? Problems?
- Overview of instructional design models and their purposes
- Activity: You will choose an instructional design model to use in constructing your own lesson plan and will develop learning outcomes. You will be able to explain why you chose this model and how it fits best with your learning environment and learning outcomes
Week 2: Student Motivation and Learning Theories
- What are the learning theories?
- The effect of a learning theory on student motivation and how to leverage it
- Impression management theories and student motivation (brief)
- Activity: You will use learning theories to align the course structure with learning outcomes, environment and types of learners. This week you will reflect on impression management in order to leverage your students’ motivation
Week 3: Assessment
- Tying assessment to learning outcomes
- Activity: You will develop assessments to align with your learning outcomes and course design
Week 4: Choosing the Right Tools
- Learner-centered courses, not technology-centered courses
- Developing appropriate learning activities based on goals and assessment
- Activity: You will outline learning activities and tools that you could implement in your lesson
About the Instructors
Nicole Pagowsky is an instruction librarian at the University of Arizona. Her research interests include critical pedagogy; game-based learning and digital badges; and student retention. She has an MLIS degree and MS in Educational Technology & Instructional Design from the University of Arizona.
Erica DeFrain is a librarian with the Research and Instructional Services department at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Her research interests include online learning environments and adult learning styles. A doctoral candidate in the Educational Psychology, she has an MLIS and MS in Educational Technology from the University of Arizona.
