Glennan named 91´«Ã½ JSC representative

91´«Ã½

CHICAGO — Kathy Glennan, head of metadata creation and enhancement and music cataloger at the University of Maryland, has been named the new 91´«Ã½ representative to the for the Development of (Resource Description and Access). The appointment is made by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services () based on a recommendation from its Cataloging and Metadata Management Section (). Glennan replaces John Attig whose term ends June 30, 2013.

As JSC representative, Kathy will represent the interests of the U.S. cataloging community in the further development of RDA. RDA provides a set of guidelines and instructions on formulating data to support resource discovery. RDA provides a comprehensive set of guidelines and instructions covering all types of content and media.

RDA is published by the 91´«Ã½, the Canadian Library Association and CILIP: Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. The constituent organizations represented on the Joint Steering Committee are: 91´«Ã½, the Australian Committee on Cataloguing, the British Library, the Canadian Committee on Cataloguing, CILIP, Deutsche Nationalbibliothek and the Library of Congress.

Glennan has served as liaison to the CaMMS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA) from the Music Library Association, then as a voting member, and now again as representative from the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. She has participated in several CC:DA task forces; she served the JSC as a member of a working group on the Appendices on capitalization, abbreviations and initial articles for RDA; she has attended several JSC meetings as an observer, and is therefore known to the group. She has also been active within relevant professional organizations. She has served in leadership roles within the Music Library Association, including a long term as chair of the Bibliographic Control Committee, which oversees all of MLA's cataloging activities. In that role, she has published articles on RDA, taught classes and webinars and organized several workshops on RDA. Most recently, while serving as a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) Standing Committee on Standards, Kathy chaired a working group that reviewed and made recommendations for PCC policies relating to RDA implementation.

Before her work at the University of Maryland, Glennan held positions at the University of Southern California. She received her M.L.S. in 1985 from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, at UCLA and her B.A. with Distinction in Music in 1982 from Swarthmore College, in Pennsylvania where she was a Phi Beta Kappa honoree.
