Ulrich’s Award to Beverley Geer
91´«Ã½
CHICAGO — The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) has named Beverley Geer as the 2013 recipient of the Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award. This award for distinguished contributions to serials is presented by the Continuing Resources Section of ALCTS and consists of a citation and $1,500 donated by ProQuest through its Serials Solutions business unit. Ms. Geer will be presented her award at the ALCTS Awards Ceremony, Sunday, June 30, during the 2013 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference in Chicago.
Beverley Geer, collection development manager at YBP Library Services, has been named for her distinguished contributions to the field of serials librarianship. She has made these contributions through her scholarship, professional contributions, extensive knowledge of and experience with the serials information chain and her passion for sharing her skills and experience with the larger library community.
Her professional contributions are noteworthy. She has served on several national committees, including chairing the ALCTS Serials Section and serving as NASIG president. She is a well-known trainer and has been involved in the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP) since its inception serving as a trainer and leading train-the-trainer sessions.
Geer’s numerous scholarly contributions are extremely well regarded and include “A Guide to Newspapers and Newspaper Holdings in Maryland” (1991), co-editing the “Serials Report” column of The Serials Librarian with Bea Caraway from 1994-2000, compiling the 2nd edition of “Notes for Serials Catalogers” (1998) and co-editing 1998 “NASIG Proceedings,” which also was co-published as an entire volume of The Serials Librarian. She spent the past 15 years as assistant editor of Serials Review, where she recruited columnists and nurtured their development. Through tough love, she worked with authors to turn out high-quality columns on current issues in serials librarianship ranging from trends in e-resources management to serials cataloging and standards updates.
As a trainer, editor and overall professional, Beverley Geer has mentored (and continues to mentor) many promising serials librarians. As one of her supporting letters notes, “Beverley Geer is the ideal candidate for the Ulrich’s Award. She has long been a leader in a number of links the serials information chain; she has contributed mightily to the serials literature; she has taught aspiring librarians and made highly useful presentations to serials librarians (and others!) on a wide variety of topics over the years. Finally, she has nurtured everyone around her – from library school students and newly-graduated MLS holders to her colleagues and other senior leaders!” Another notes, “Her energy, intelligence, determination, outstanding people skills, wonderful sense of humor, and sheer hard work were always, always factors in her success as a leader.”
