Copyright, libraries and digitization at the 2014 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference

LAS VEGAS—How are libraries coping with digitization and copyright? Are these activities legal? On Sunday, June 29, 2014, copyright experts will discuss digital access and mass digitization projects during "Copyright and Digitization+," a conference session that takes place during the 2014 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference in Las Vegas. The conference will be held from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the Las Vegas Convention Center, room S219.
A panel of experts will address fair use and the provision of digital access such as YouTube, library exceptions for born digital resources, and how mass digitization projects are faring given copyright restrictions on access and use. Speakers will discuss collaborative projects like the Grateful Dead Archive Online, and the ways that Grateful Dead fans participate in the curation process of this collection of music, radio interviews, fanzines, posters, T-shirts, and more. Additionally, speakers will explore the complexities of music digitization and the urgency to preserve music before it is lost to future generations.
Speakers include Katie Fortney, copyright policy and education officer of the California Digital Library; Eric Harbeson, music special collections librarian from the University of Colorado, Boulder; and Josh Hadro, reference and research services deputy director for the New York Public Library and former executive editor of Library Journal.
