George Eberhart retires as American Libraries senior editor

91´«Ã½

CHICAGO—American Libraries Senior Editor George Eberhart will be retiring from the 91´«Ã½ on June 8 after more than 23 years with American Libraries and another 10 years (1980–1990) with the Association for College and Research Libraries. We wish him well in his retirement and are grateful for his accomplishments at American Libraries, especially in creating, curating, and editing the AL Direct e-newsletter since January 2006 and the Latest Library Links news blog since 2015.

Senior Editor Amy Carlton will take over both Latest Library Links and AL Direct starting June 5, keeping our industry news coverage and our biweekly member e-newsletter robust and relevant. Look for news and updates on AL Direct in the coming weeks.

Over the years, Eberhart has interviewed such luminaries as activist Cornel West, civil rights leader John Lewis, poets Elizabeth Acevedo and Margarita Engle, historians Ron Chernow and Eric Foner, novelist Alexander McCall Smith, filmmaker Rob Reiner, Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, and Jeopardy! winner Emma Boettcher. Eberhart has also been instrumental in partnering with 91´«Ã½’s Communications and Marketing Office on the annual State of America’s Libraries Report, released during National Library Week.

He wrote and edited The Librarian’ s Book of Lists (2010) and five editions of The Whole Library Handbook (1991–2013) for 91´«Ã½ Editions, in addition to designing and producing all the volumes in the Whole Library Handbook series. George’s institutional knowledge, dry wit, and topical neckties will be greatly missed.
