United for Libraries to host ‘First Author, First Book’ at 91ý Annual Conference

PHILADELPHIA — United for Libraries will present “First Author, First Book: Veteran and Rookies,” 8:30-10 a.m. on Sunday, June 29 at the 91ý Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

This traditional event, which will feature a continental breakfast, will include first time authors Adi Alsaid, Kimberly Elkins, Oscar Goodman and Jim McGinty, joined by veteran author Will Thomas. The program will be moderated by Barbara Hoffert, editor of Library Journal’s “Prepub Alert.” An author book signing will follow.

(“Let’s Get Lost,” Harlequin Teen/Harlequin) studied at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He coaches middle school basketball and writes in his free time in his hometown of Mexico City.

(“What is Visible,” Twleve/Hachette) was a finalist for the National Magazine Award and has published fiction and nonfiction in the Atlantic, Best New American Voices, Iowa Review, Chicago Tribune, Glamour, and Village Voice.

(“Being Oscar: From Mob Lawyer to Mayor of Las Vegas,” Weinstein Books/Perseus) is the former mayor of Las Vegas. He is now the official spokesperson for the city, a director emeritus of The Mob Museum, and the namesake for the restaurant “Oscar’s Beef, Booze & Broads.” His wife is the current mayor of Las Vegas, serving until 2016.

(“Right to Kill: A Brooklyn Tale,” iUniverse) earned a BA, an MBA, and an honorary doctorate from St. John’s University in New York. A Vietnam vet, he retired as colonel from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. His business career spans four decades as an executive with Dun & Bradstreet, CSA, RR Bowker and Cambridge Information Group.

(“Fatal Enquiry,” Minotaur, Macmillan) is the author of the Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn series, including "The Black Hand," The Hellfire Conspiracy," "The Limehouse Text," "To Kingdom Come" and the Shamus and Barry award-nominated "Some Danger Involved." He works as a librarian in Oklahoma, where he lives with his family.
