CHICAGO – Christian Robinson will appear as one of three featured speakers during “Authors in the Afternoon” presented during the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) National Conference & Exhibition. Robinson, along with Sarah Dessen and Jordan Sonnenblick, will discuss his work and answer attendee-submitted questions during this new author event taking place Thursday, Nov. 9. “When you look at a picture book, you might think story by the author and illustrations by the illustrator," said Robinson during “Brief but Spectacular” for PBS News Hour. “The story is actually something that happens when the author and the illustrator come together. It's what happens on the page. On my books, I like to have written by or words by the author and pictures by the illustrator.”

In 2016, Robinson was named a Caldecott Honoree and received a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor for his art in “Last Stop on Market Street” with Matt de la Peña. Robinson’s “Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker,” written by Patricia Hruby Powell, received numerous awards and accolades including a Sibert Informational Book Award Honor and a Coretta Scott King Award Illustration Honor from the 91��ý; a Boston Globe-Horn Book Nonfiction Honor; and a place on the Wall Street Journal's 10 Best Children's Books of the Year List.

“Growing up, I actually — I didn't have that close of a relationship with books,” explains Robinson in "Brief but Spectacular." “I actually struggled to read. And so, I was definitely drawn to books with pictures. I just loved that, you know, so much could be communicated with just an image.”

“Do you know 'The Art of Fun?'” asks Schenell Agee, author co-chair. “Fun equals experimenting, according to Mr. Robinson: ‘I have the most fun by experimenting and trying all sorts of different mediums and techniques.’ This is an important message school librarians share with students as they move through their educational careers.”
