AASL webinar helps school librarians evaluate school library collections

91´«Ã½

CHICAGO – A new webinar from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will help school librarians in this increasingly digital age to evaluate and demonstrate the value of their school library’s collection. Presented by Sue Kimmel, “Counting on What We Have: Evaluating School Library Collections” will take place at 6 p.m. Central on Thursday, Nov. 13. For more information and to register, visit .

AASL’s “Standards for the 21st-Century Learner” offers a vision of learners as creators and not just consumers of information and ideas. It suggests the need for new kinds of collections and new measures of quality. As school library collections adapt and become increasingly digital and less visible, school librarians will need to find new ways to evaluate their collections and demonstrate their value to stakeholders. During the webinar, Kimmel will discuss collection mapping and output measures for school libraries related to today’s learning contexts.

Sue Kimmel is an assistant professor at Darden College of Education at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. Her previous experience includes working as a book reviewer, a bibliographer and almost 20 years as a building-level school librarian. An AASL member since 1987, Kimmel is currently chair of the research and statistics committee and a member of the Knowledge Quest editorial board. She is National Board Certified in School Library Media.

“Counting on What We Have: Evaluating School Library Collections” is open to all. A seat during the live webinar is guaranteed to the first 100 attendees. To register, visit “Upcoming Webinars” at .
