Both programs will take place Friday, June 24, 2011 at the Marriott Convention Center Hotel.

The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends, and Foundation’s (ALTAFF) popular Nuts & Bolts program will feature speakers addressing topics of interest to Friends, Trustees, Foundations and citizen advocates, followed by roundtable discussions geared toward each group. Speakers include: Nann Blaine Hilyard, director, Zion-Benton Public Library; Robin Hoklotubbe, Friends and volunteer services coordinator, San Bernardino County (Calif.) Library; and Kristin Murphy, government relations specialist, 91´«Ã½’s Washington Office. Meet and greet with coffee begins at 8:30 a.m. and a boxed lunch will be served at noon. Attendees are encouraged to bring brochures, flyers and other library marketing materials to share. Advanced registration for “Nuts & Bolts for Trustees, Friends, and Foundations” (Event code: ALT3) is priced at $50 and onsite will be $75.

“Boomers, Staff & Students -- Engaging the Many Voices of Advocacy: An Advocacy Institute Workshop” (Event code: 91´«Ã½9) will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees will learn how to engage these three segments of the population that inherently understand the value of the library to be vocal supporters and explore ways to mobilize these groups as advocates. Buffy Hamilton, high school librarian, Creekview High School, Canton, Ga., will speak on students as advocates; Carla Lehn, library programs consultant, California State Library, will discuss reaching the Baby Boomer generation; and Pamela Sandlian Smith, director, Rangeview Library District, Colorado, will explain how to empower library staff. The workshop will also highlight federal legislation and lobbying and how they affect libraries on a grassroots level. Vivian Wynn, chair, Federal Library Legislative and Advocacy Network (FLLAN), will discuss how libraries can get informed and get involved on ways to protect fundamental library values. Advanced registration is priced at $50 and onsite will be $75. No lunch is offered during the afternoon session.
