CHICAGO - The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services presents a wealth of events on important topics at the Midwinter Meeting in San Diego.

If you are eager to find out what is involved in developing and presenting a webinar, please stop by the Webinar Openhouse beginning at noon PST on Sunday, Jan. 9 in the convention center, room 05A. Bring your lunch and talk with a member of the ALCTS Continuing Education Committee about webinar basics. Drinks will be provided. You need not be an ALCTS member to participate.

Is Selection Dead? The Rise of Collection Management and the Twilight of Selection: a CMDS Forum

Collection development is undergoing a dramatic change. With the rise of collection management, collection development as we have known it is a dying art. What is the overall impact of current trends? How is the intellectual work of building collections and engagement shifting? Join your collection management and development colleagues for this timely discussion. The forum begins at 4 p.m. PST Sunday, Jan. 9 in the convention center, room 25C.

True Cooperative Cataloging: Single Record Source vs. Open Record Sources: a CCS Forum

Beginning at 3:30 p.m. PST Friday, Jan. 7 in the convention center, room 26 A/B, you'll have a chance to hear experts in cooperative cataloging talk about three important issues: legal aspects involving cataloging provided by outside vendors that come with restrictions; SkyRiver vs. OCLC, in a cooperative environment, can there be ownership?; and standards in a cooperative environment, who gets to set them?. Introduced by Shelby Harken, chair of the ALCTS Cataloging and Classification Section, these presentations will provide rich discussions and timely information.

PARS Forum on ARL Preservation Statistics

Interested in learning more about how the ARL preservation statistics have been gathered, how they are used and what is their future. Then join the Preservation Section of ALCTS in this forum. The forum begins at 4 p.m. PST Sunday, Jan. 9 in the convention center room 30E.

Outsourcing Practices in Technical Services

The ALCTS Technical Services Workflow Efficiency Interest Group offers meeting attendees from administrator or librarian this opportunity to hear more about this increasingly ubiquitous presence in library operations. Due to budget restrictions, shrinking staff levels and shifting priorities, outsourcing has become a potential solution. Join the discussion from 1:30 - 3:30 PST on Monday, Jan. 10 in the convention center, room 30A.

Book and Paper Interest Group discusses Web technology

From 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. PST on Sunday, Jan. 9, the Preservation Section's Book and Paper Interest Group brings together a group of experts to talk about the influence Web technology and tools have on collaboration, marketing, development and funding purposes in preservation. Be there, in the convention center room 24A.
