Online resources @ your library

91´«Ã½

CHICAGO - Since the launch of the Campaign for America’s Libraries, libraries have used the @ your library brand to showcase the role they play in a digital age.

With more of its resources available online, the Abilene (Texas) Public Library decided that the library’s outreach and promotional efforts needed to go digital as well. Recently, the library began hosting Web tutorials about how to use new technologies, the most recent of these being “Mobile apps @ your library.” This online video features free library-specific applications for smart phone and iPhone users. The tutorials promote the library as the go-to place for understanding new technology and are featured on Abilene’s local Channel 7, YouTube and on the library’s website.

“The library uses the @ your library brand to remind users of all the resources available to them at libraries, not just the Abilene Public Library,” said Alyssa Crow, a children’s librarian featured in the video. “The great thing about using the @ your library brand on the Web is that people from all over the country can see it and be reminded of their own library and what what it has to offer.”

Walla Walla County (Wash.) Rural Library is one of 55.6 percent of libraries offering access to e-books, and audio content via the Web. To promote new Web-based e-book and audio book collections, the library posted an article titled, “Downloadable Audio Books and eBooks @ your library” on its blog. Similarly, the James Kennedy Public Library of Dyersville, Iowa, promoted its digital download system with a blog post entitled, “eBooks @ your library.”

The “Online explorers @ your library” class offered by the Thunder Bay (Ontario) Public Library teaches seniors tips for accessing free resources from the library’s website. Each week for the past three months, instructors have walked participants through the library’s website, demonstrating how to renew and place holds on books and how to set up RSS feeds and news alerts about favorite authors and topics. Key emphasis is placed on the fact that all resources demonstrated in class are available free with a library card.
