Neil Gaiman latest big-name author to join the 91´«Ã½ Midwinter roster

CHICAGO— From the Youth Media Awards, the RUSA Book Awards and the “Spotlight on Adult Literature” to Neil Gaiman, Armistead Maupin, Richard Rhodes, Kathy Reichs and Ted Danson, the 91´«Ã½ Midwinter Meeting promises a rich feast for attendees who enjoy hearing from and interacting with authors. Here’s a day-by-day snapshot of author-related events.
Friday, Jan. 7
The popular ERT/Booklist Author Forum, moderated by Booklist adult books editor Brad Hooper, with speakers David Levithan, Stewart O’Nan, Armistead Maupin and Susan Vreeland, addressing the art of fiction writing and what it takes to become a best-selling author.
Saturday, Jan. 8
The Sunrise Speaker Series starts you off with a bestselling author--. Like her character Temperance Brennan (the central character in the series of the same name), Reichs is a forensic anthropologist. A professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, she also created the Fox television hit "Bones." Her latest publication is "VIRALS," her first novel for young readers. Reichs’ appearance is sponsored by Penguin.
During Saturday afternoon’s “Spotlight on Adult Literature” in the Exhibits Hall, participating publishers will feature book signings, including free books and galleys at some booths. The “Spotlight” is sponsored by ALTAFF and 91´«Ã½ Conference Services.
Also on Saturday afternoon, hear acclaimed science fiction author discuss his vision of how we’ll interact with information in the future. Vinge’s work pushes information and technology to its incredible, but possible, conclusions. The author of several books, Vinge explores in “Rainbows End” one potentially very real future for libraries in which we live in a world of complete information immersion. Come and see Jason Griffey interview Vinge—futurist, author, thinker and visionary. This event is sponsored by LITA’s Imagineering Interest Group.
End the afternoon with at the 12th Annual Arthur Curley Memorial Lecture. Rhodes is the author or editor of 22 books, including “The Making of the Atomic Bomb,” which won a Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction, a National Book Award and a National Book Critics Circle Award, and “Dark Sun: The Making of the Hydrogen Bomb,” which was one of three finalists for a Pulitzer Prize in History. He has received numerous fellowships for research and writing. His appearance is sponsored by Random House.
Sunday, Jan. 9
continues the Sunrise Speaker Series on Sunday morning. He began writing fiction at age 22 after completing a degree in sociology and is the author of many books, including “Townie” (February 2011) and “The Garden of Last Days and House of Sand and Fog” (an Oprah Book Club pick and a finalist for the National Book Award, also made into a well-received movie). Dubus’ appearance is sponsored by Norton.
(listed as one of the top 10 living postmodern writers in the "Dictionary of Literary Biography" and an author with more than 1.5 million Twitter followers) joins Midwinter for Sunday’s “Afternoon with Neil Gaiman and Nancy Pearl.” Gaiman is the bestselling author of “The Graveyard Book,” the first book to win both the Newbery and Carnegie Medals; “Coraline,” recently adapted into an Oscar-nominated animated film; the ground-breaking “Sandman” comics series, as well as adult novels. will be interviewing Gaiman. Well known to librarians, Pearl writes and speaks about the pleasures of reading and regularly comments on books for NPR’s Morning Edition. She is the author of several books and has received many awards for her work. HarperCollins is sponsoring the discussion.
Ted Danson will be interviewed by Roberta Stevens for the 91´«Ã½ President’s Program, also on Sunday afternoon. Recognized as an accomplished TV and film actor, winner of two Emmys and three Golden Globe awards and nominee for 12 additional Emmys, eight Golden Globes and one SAG Award, Danson is an author and one of the world’s most influential oceanic environmental activists. He helped found Oceana, the largest organization in the world focused solely on ocean conservation.
RUSA’s Book and Media Awards reception is a celebration of the best books and resources of the year, selected by member volunteers and announced at the event. The people who have won RUSA awards related to book reviewing, promotion or publishing will also be honored. Join the party to end your afternoon!

Start your day at the high-profile Youth Media Awards, where each year 91´«Ã½ honors books and media for children and teens. Recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent and selected by committees composed of librarians and other literature and media experts, the awards encourage original and creative work in the field of children’s and young adult literature and media and garner national media coverage.
And rounding it all out on Monday afternoon—the ALTAFF Gala Author Tea (ticketed event), where bestselling authors Elizabeth Adler, Paula McLain, Conor Grennan, Richard Louv and Luann Rice will discuss their writing life and forthcoming books. A book signing will follow, with some books given away free and others available for purchase at a generous discount. ALTAFF recommends that you buy your tickets early, as this event often sells out.
