Kim, Dembicki and Stands With Many to speak at Many Voices, One Nation 2010

CHICAGO - The 91´«Ã½’s Office for Diversity is pleased to announce Eugenia Kim, Matt Dembicki and Joseph Stands With Many as participants in Many Voices, One Nation during the 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.
Eugenia Kim’s first novel, “The Calligrapher’s Daughter,” is the winner of the 2009 Borders Original Voices Award and selected as a Best Book of 2009 by The Washington Post. Kim is the daughter of Korean immigrant parents who came to America shortly after the Pacific War. She has published short stories and essays in journals and anthologies, including “Echoes Upon Echoes: New Korean American Writings,” and is an MFA graduate of Bennington College. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband and son.
Matt Dembicki and Joseph Stands With Many will co-present from their recent collaboration in “Trickster: Native American Tales: A Graphic Collection.” Cartoonist Matt Dembicki
is is the artist/writer of graphic novels, including the award-winning nature parable “Mr. Big.” His work has appeared in numerous comics anthologies, including the Eisner Award- and Harvey Award-nominated “Postcards” and “Bash Magazine.” He edited “Trickster: Native American Tales: A Graphic Collection” from Fulcrum Publishing. Joseph Stands With Many is a Cherokee storyteller and educator. The stories that Stands With Many shares not only entertain children (and adults) but are traditionally used to teach values and lessons about life. Through stories, music and dance, Stands With Many shares these traditions and values with his audience.
Eugenia Kim, Matt Dembicki and Joseph Stands With Many will be joined by authors Benjamin Alire Sáenz, R. Dwayne Betts, Marina Budhos, and Kekla Magoon at Many Voices, One Nation during the 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.
This year’s Many Voices, One Nation will take place from 7:30-10 p.m. on Friday June 25 and will highlight 91´«Ã½ President Camila Alire’s Family Literacy Focus, an initiative to encourage families in ethnically diverse communities to read and learn together. The Many Voices, One Nation program, an evening of literature and performance during the 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference, brings together writers and artists from different perspectives and presents a rich program of spoken word, music and performance art that celebrates and reminds us of the many unique cultures sharing one world.
