CHICAGO – Andromeda Yelton, currently enrolled in the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science, has been named the winner of the 2010 LITA/Ex Libris Student Writing Award, sponsored by Ex Libris Group and the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½).

Yelton's paper, entitled "Document Classification using Wikipedia" describes the use of a script employing Wikipedia as context for analyzing the subjects of nonfiction works. This is an attempt to address the issue of an accurate and automated scheme of subject classification.

The LITA/Ex Libris Student Writing Award recognizes outstanding writing on a topic in the area of libraries and information technology by a student or students enrolled in an 91´«Ã½-accredited library and information studies graduate program. The winning manuscript will be published in Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL), and the winner will receive $1,000 and a certificate of merit.

"The members of the LITA/Ex Libris Student Writing Award Committee and I are pleased to acknowledge and honor Andromeda Yelton's intriguing, yet practical and readable manuscript, with this award. Her paper includes an attempt to address the issue of an automated scheme of subject classification that would work with today’s information stream, " said Krista E. Clumpner, chair of the committee.

The award will be presented at the LITA Awards Reception on Sunday, June 27, 2010, at the 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference in Washington, DC.
