Donna K. McDonald elected as 2010-2011 ALTAFF Vice President/President-Elect
91´«Ã½
PHILADELPHIA – Donna K. McDonald, director of the Arkansas River Valley Regional Library System, has been elected 2010-2011 vice-president/president elect of the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF), a division of the 91´«Ã½ (91´«Ã½).
As director of the Arkansas River Valley Regional Library System, McDonald provides overall professional library management of a four-county, seven-library system. She has been a member of ALTAFF since 2007 and served as chair of the Publications Committee in 2008-2009 and is currently the Trustee Section chair elect. She is the co-author of “A Library Board’s Practical Guide to Self-Evaluation” (ALTAFF, 2008). McDonald has also served as the chair of the Legislative Committee of the Arkansas Library Association since 2007 and was chair of the Arkansas State Library Board, 2007-2008. She received the Bessie B. Moore Trustee Award from the Arkansas Library Association in 2009. McDonald received her MLIS in 1999 from the University of Oklahoma and her BA in 1979 from the University of Arkansas.
“I support ALTAFF's mission to be an ‘advocate of advocates’ by providing the training, publications and support needed to empower effective Trustees and Friends,” McDonald said. “ALTAFF is a relatively new organization with an impressive number of members. Some of these members may not be aware of the resources available to them through membership in ALTAFF or the leadership roles in the organization that are available. I believe we need to be proactive in making sure Trustees and Friends groups across the nation are aware of the advantages of ALTAFF membership and all it can provide. I think it is also time to encourage greater membership participation and input.”
Three additional board positions were filled during the 2010 election. Former FOLUSA president and long-time board member Susan J. Schmidt was elected to the three-year position of ALTAFF Division Councilor. Schmidt is a media assistant at the Montgomery County Public Schools, president of the Friends of the Little Falls chapter of the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County since 1992 and a governor’s appointed member of the Maryland Advisory Council on Libraries since 1998. She also served as president of the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County from 2004-2006. Schmidt has been an active participant in and speaker at 91´«Ã½’s Advocacy Institute since its inception and helps to coordinate ALTAFF’s popular Nuts & Bolts program for Friends, Trustees, and Foundations held at both the 91´«Ã½ Midwinter Meeting and 91´«Ã½ Annual Conference each year.
Kim D. Johnson was elected trustee at large. Johnson has served as a trustee of the Maywood Public Library since 1993. An active member of both 91´«Ã½ and ALTAFF, Johnson has served as chair of ALTAFF President’s Committee, 2009-present; secretary, Illinois Library Association (ILA) Trustee Forum, 2009-present; chair, ALTAFF Specialized Outreach Services Committee, 2007-present; member, ILA Trustee Forum, 1999-present; president, ILA Trustee Forum, 2005-08; member, ALTAFF Education of Trustee Committee, 2005-07; and vice-president ILA, Trustee Forum, 2004-05.
Dave Hargett was elected trustee section chair elect for 2010-2011 and will serve as trustee section chair for 2011-2012. Since 2008 Hargett has been a trustee of the Fountaindale Public Library where he is vice-president of the board and chair of the Building Committee. He is currently ALTAFF’s representative to 91´«Ã½’s Web Advisory Board and serves as chair of ALTAFF’s Newsletter & Website Advisory Committee. Hargett is also active in other national organizations as a member of the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists and as national chairman of the board of the American Sleep Apnea Association, 2004-2008.
ALTAFF is a division of 91´«Ã½ with approximately 5,000 Friends of Library, Trustee, Foundation and individual members and affiliates representing hundreds of thousands of library supporters. The new division brings together Trustees and Friends into a partnership that unites the voices of citizens for libraries to create a powerful force for libraries in the 21st century.
