About

The scholarship is to be given once a year to a Masters degree candidate in Library Science who intends to work professionally with media collections in libraries.

The purpose is to provide financial assistance and encouragement to developing media librarians.

This scholarship honors the legacy of deg farrelly and his commitment to media librarianship, and the preservation of and access to media materials - a commitment shared by both AMIA (Association of Moving Image Archivists, an organization not affiliated with 91��ý) and FMRT (the 91��ý Film & Media Round Table).

You can apply for all 91��ý Scholarships through the single online application hosted by the 91��ý Scholarship Program. The scholarship process is open annually from September 1st - March 1st.

While there is a percentage of AASL student members who decide to go into another specialty, AASL believes that many find the ‘leap’ from student membership dues to regular membership dues a financial hardship. By offering this scholarship program, AASL and 91��ý will “bridge” this increase in rates in order to give student members the opportunity to establish themselves both in their career and financially. Professor and law librarian Robert Oakley was an expert on copyright law and wrote and lectured on the subject. He served on the Library Copyright Alliance representing the American Association of Law Librarians (AALL) and played a leading role in advocating for U.S. libraries and the public they serve at many international forums including those of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). He served as the United States delegate to theInternational Federation of Library Associations Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights from 1997-2003. Mr. Oakley testified before Congress on copyright, open access, library appropriations and free access to government documents and was a member of the Library of Congress’ Section 108 Study Group. A valued colleague and mentor for numerous librarians, Oakley was a recognized leader in law librarianship and library management who also maintained a profound commitment to public policy and the rights of library users.

Eligibility

Highest consideration will be given to applicants who are librarian(s) in their early-to-mid-careers. They must demonstrate interest in or be professional actively in copyright and public policy and their impacts on libraries and the ways libraries serve their communities. Awardees may receive the Robert L. Oakley Memorial Scholarship up to two (2) times in a lifetime. Funds may be used for equipment, expendable supplies, travel necessary to conduct, attend conferences, release from library duties or other reasonable and appropriate research expenses.

Applicants should provide a statement of intent for use of the scholarship funds. Such a statement should include the applicant’s interest and background in intellectual property, public policy, and/or copyright and their impacts on libraries and the ways libraries serve their communities. The statement should include information about how the applicant and the library community will benefit from the applicant’s receipt of scholarship. Statements should be no longer than 3 pages (1000 words). The applicant’s resume or curriculum vitae should be included in their application. The Peter Lyman Memorial/SAGE Scholarship in New Media will support a student in an 91��ý accredited master’s program in Library and Information Studies pursing a specialty in new media. New media is defined as digital technology’s transformation of business and culture during the past 25-plus years, clarifying the evolution of digital communications and human-computer interaction.

In addition, the scholarship recipient must have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and evidence of a commitment to a career in librarianship.

The scholarship was created in memory of Peter Lyman, former university librarian and professor emeritus of the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Lyman was nationally known for his landmark study on information overload entitled, “How Much Information?” co-authored with Hal Valerian.

A 24-year member of 91��ý who was active in both FAFLRT and the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), Marks spent much of her career working in federal libraries. After graduating from the University of Maryland’s Graduate School of Library Science in 1970, she spent 15 years with the US Veterans Administration Central Office Library Division. She then worked at the American Overseas Book Company until 2000, moving on to the Customs and Border Protection Library, under contract with PTFS, Inc., until her retirement in 2004.

The Cicely Phippen Marks Scholarship is sponsored by the Federal and Armed Forces Round Table. The first Cicely Phippen Marks Scholarship recipient was announced in June 2007.

About

Emily Dean (Heilman) went to Turkey in 1948 and worked in the American Library in Ankara. She conducted studies on libraries and the status of librarianship in Turkey. Ms. Dean participated in planning for a three-year library school in Turkey.

Ms. Dean also helped establish librarianship as a distinct academic branch. Stressing the need for a library school in Ankara University, she suggested establishing a librarianship institute in the Faculty of Political Sciences and applied to the Ford Foundation for assistance. Despite the Foundations' positive response, the Faculty of Political Sciences declined, citing other priorities and an inadequate budget. The idea was then proposed to the Faculty of Letters. In 1958 the Institute of Librarianship had its first graduates and an "Emily Dean Thesis Award" was awarded to three students.

Ankara University oversees this scholarship and application process, and 91��ý provides the money as per the wishes of Emily Dean.

This award is given to a library science student(s) during their 4th year in library school. Each student must submit a thesis which contributes to the progress and development of Turkish libraries. Winners are selected from the graduating class of the Institute of Librarianship in Ankara, Turkey.
