In its first year, the Jury selected three winners in early 2004 to be honored at the 91传媒 Awards presentation at 91传媒 Annual. The 91传媒 (91传媒) staff liaison arranged for the President of 91传媒 to announce the 2005 Schneider Award winners at the 91传媒 Youth Media Award Press Conference where all 91传媒 children鈥檚 literature awards are officially announced. </p> <p>The Schneider Family Book Award recognizes three categories for recognition: Younger Children (ages 4-8), Middle Grade (ages 9-13), and Young Adult (ages 14-18). Awards are presented to English language works published the year prior to the announcement date. The award is announced in January/February and presented to the winning authors or editors at the 91传媒 Annual Conference in June. The award winners each receive a commemorative plaque and $5,000. If a winning title features both an author and an illustrator, the $5,000 will be divided equally between the creators. The bronze medal has the winner's name and the date engraved on the back. The 91传媒 Executive Board in 1922 delegated to the Children's Librarians' Section the responsibility for selecting the book to receive the Newbery Medal.</p> <p>The inscription on the Newbery Medal still reads "Children's Librarians' Section," although the section has changed its name four times and its membership now includes both school and public library children's librarians in contrast to the years 1922-58, when the section, under three different names, included only public library children's librarians. Today the Medal is administered by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of 91传媒.</p> <h3>How the Newbery Medal Came to Be</h3> <p>The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the 91传媒 for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. On June 22, 1921, Frederic G. Melcher proposed the award to the 91传媒 meeting of the Children's Librarians' Section and suggested that it be named for the eighteenth-century English bookseller John Newbery. The idea was enthusiastically accepted by the children's librarians, and Melcher's official proposal was approved by the 91传媒 Executive Board in 1922. In Melcher's formal agreement with the board, the purpose of the Newbery Medal was stated as follows: "To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children. To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels. To give those librarians, who make it their life work to serve children's reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field."</p> <p>The Newbery Award thus became the first children's book award in the world. Its terms, as well as its long history, continue to make it the best known and most discussed children's book award in this country.</p> <p>From the beginning of the awarding of the Newbery and Caldecott Medals, committees could, and usually did, cite other books as worthy of attention. Such books were referred to as Newbery or Caldecott "runners-up." In 1971 the term "runners-up" was changed to "honor books." The new terminology was made retroactive so that all former runners-up are now referred to as Newbery or Caldecott Honor Books.</p> </body> </html></div> </div> Annual <div class="field field--name-field-deadline-application field--type-datetime field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Next Deadline</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2020-12-31T06:00:00Z" class="datetime">December 31, 2020</time> </div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-eligibility field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Eligibility</div> <div class="field__item"> <html><body><p>Please visit ALSC's <a href="http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/newberymedal/newberymedal/criteria-submissions-com-info" target="_blank" title="opens Caldecott eligibility page in new window">Newbery Medal Terms, Criteria, Committee, and Submission</a> page for information about eligibility and submission.</p> </body> </html></div> </div> <div class="inline-block mr-[1.125rem] mb-5 py-[1.125rem] font-urw text-xs rounded-lg bg-transparent text-[#101828] font-bold uppercase"><div id="taxonomy-term-467" class="taxonomy-term vocabulary-ala-units"> <div class="content"> <div class="my-[1.25rem]"> <a href="/alsc"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/list_item_180w/public/2023-10/ALSC_color_550px.png?itok=JKxDXxc2" width="180" height="49" alt="Association for Library Service to Children color logo" class="image-style-list-item-180w"> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-committee-contact-name field--type-string field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Contact</div> <div class="field__item">Aimee Strittmatter</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-email field--type-email field--label-hidden field__item"> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-date-began field--type-yearonly field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Date Began</div> <div class="field__item">1922</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-date-terminated field--type-yearonly field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Date Terminated</div> <div class="field__item">0</div> </div> <html><body><div>The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the 91传媒, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.</div> </body> </html> Tue, 28 Feb 2012 01:57:33 +0000 CJONES 18177 at Pura Belpr茅 Award /awards/books-media/pura-belpre-award <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Pura Belpr茅 Award</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>CJONES</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2012-02-27T19:57:33-06:00" title="Monday, February 27, 2012 - 19:57" class="datetime">Mon, 02/27/2012 - 19:57</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-name field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Name Sort</div> <div class="field__item">Belpr茅 Pura Award</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-opportunity-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Opportunity Type</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/award-type/bpma" hreflang="en">Book, Print &amp; Media Awards</a></div> </div> <a href="/taxonomy/term/924" hreflang="en">Youth Media Award</a>|<a href="/taxonomy/term/593" hreflang="en">Children and Young Adults</a> <picture> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/opportunity_400x400/public/awardsgrants/belpre_medal_3.jpg?itok=29VE_qC9 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/jpeg" width="400" height="400"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/awardsgrants/belpre_medal_3.jpg?itok=__AezbhY 1x" type="image/jpeg" width="100" height="101"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/opportunity_400x400/public/awardsgrants/belpre_medal_3.jpg?itok=29VE_qC9" width="400" height="400" alt="Belpr茅 Medal image"> </picture> <a class="btn-white" href="http://www.ala.org/ala/awardsgrants/img/printmediaimgs/printmediaseals/belpre_medal.jpg" title="External Link">External Link</a> <div class="field field--name-field-history-description field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <h2 class="field__label">About</h2> <div class="field__item text-[1.125em]"> <html><body><p>The Pura Belpr茅 Award, established in 1996, is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. Within the circle is the image of an African American child reading a book. The five main religious symbols below the image of the child represent nonsectarianism.
