Description: Workplace accessibility theoretically allows library workers with disabilities to do their best work and retain their jobs. How accessible is the library workplace? How do we develop empathy and create policies, spaces, and accommodation plans in concert with disabled individuals that are unique and flexible to the individual's needs without placing unintentional barriers and burdens on them? How can we ensure that we are creating a sustainably supportive and accessible workplace? Join us for a conversation addressing these questions and more.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will:

Develop a better understanding of how diverse and unique accommodation plans are based on the individual in question.
Discuss policies and space designs that they have seen increase, or create barriers to, accessibility within the Library workplace.
Share resources (groups, news, government websites) to help individuals looking to develop empathy and identify potential action items for change in their own workplace.

Who Should Attend: Anyone who is interested in fostering inclusive and supportive workplaces for individuals with visible and invisible disabilities.

Moderators:

Kiyomi Deards is a Professor and part of the Collection Strategies and Open Scholarship Department at the University Libraries, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She identifies as disabled and has previously served as the Chair of the Libraries Faculty, and as Visiting Program Officer for Diversity and Leadership for the Association of Research Libraries (ARL).

Margaret Dawson has spent 23 years working in academic and joint-use libraries. From 2014 to 2021, she worked at Texas A&M University-Central Texas in Killeen, Texas as an Outreach and Instruction Librarian, and has developed programs for university students, their children, and the general public. She is currently the Co-Head of Public Services and Outreach. She has presented and published on the topics of instruction and outreach.

Mary Schiavone (she/her) is a Student Success and Engagement Librarian and Federal Depository Coordinator at Beloit College. Her current work centers around increasing approachability and accessibility in academic libraries.

How to Participate:

e-Forums are two-day, moderated, electronic discussion forums that provide an opportunity for librarians and library professionals to discuss matters of interest on an email discussion list. These discussions are free and available to anyone who wishes to subscribe to the email list.

Looking for a tool to help manage your projects? All these things and more are part of learning to manage your individual and collaborative projects to increase efficiency and transparency. Join this e-forum to discuss your successes, your not-so-successful endeavors, and to learn how to incorporate project management solutions to best fit your needs through all the stages of a project. Both those new to project management and seasoned PMs are invited to the conversation.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this e-Forum, attendees will be able to:

Apply project management techniques to day-to-day work;
Identify and communicate with stakeholders to effectively share project updates;
Discover helpful tools to manage projects; and
Connect with others in the library community interested in project management.

Moderators:

Nicole Lewis is the Metadata Standards Librarian at the Brigham Young University Library. She is responsible for providing leadership and guidance on the development, analysis, and application of metadata schemes, and manages database and metadata cleanup projects. Prior to BYU, Nicole worked at the University of Utah and Backstage Library Works. She has an MLIS from the University of Alabama and a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Timothy Provenzano is the Digital Initiatives Librarian at Arizona State University Libraries, and the co-chair of the Core Project Management Interest Group. He has worked at ASU since 2018, and has worked as a Project Manager in several roles within higher education, including administering a First in the World Grant from the US Department of Education. He has a BA in Philosophy from Arizona State University, an MA from the University of Arizona, and an MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. His research interests include the organization of digital collections in repositories and linked data in archives.

Kelly Sattler is the Project Manager for the Libraries Strategic Projects, Michigan State University, and currently the co-chair of the Core Project Management Interest Group. Kelly has worked at Michigan State for 18 years. The first 15 as Head of the Web Services Unit managing the Libraries’ website. Prior to working at MSU, Kelly worked for Exelon in their IT department. She has a BS in Computer Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering and an MLIS from UIUC. She’s volunteered in many roles within Core and LITA over the past 18 years. She’s also a member of the 91��ý Biblioquilters. Like many librarians, she loves cats and drinking tea.

High-impact digital library outreach and instruction

CHICAGO — Digital library terminology like “accessible,” “discoverable,” and “searchable” usually presumes passive collections waiting to be found by motivated information seekers. Rarely do we envision collection managers initiating outreach with those most likely to benefit from the collections. “The High-Impact Digital Library: Innovative Approaches for Outreach and Instruction,” published by 91��ý Editions in collaboration with Core Publishing, flips the script. Anna Neatrour, Jeremy Myntti, Rachel Jane Wittmann, Rebekah Cummings, Jane D. Monson, and Megan Myres McMillan explore the many ways that digital library practitioners at various types of cultural institutions proactively promote their unique resources. Providing both inspiration and pragmatic guidance to readers as they undertake their own initiatives, this book:

discusses the results of a unique survey that provides new and structured information on digital library outreach and instruction;
presents outreach case studies illustrating uses of social media promotion, integration of digital collections into teaching and instruction activities, partnerships with external campus units or community organizations, and other activities;
explores many types of instruction, from drop-in class sessions and training to course-integrated instruction and ways that digital library practitioners can contribute to the Open Educational Resources (OER) and open pedagogy movements;
details the digital humanities and digital scholarship programs developed at the University of Utah by many of the authors through cross-departmental collaboration;
describes the ways in which the pandemic spurred many institutions to use rapid response collecting to practice community engagement; and
speculates on future directions for outreach and instruction for digital libraries

Neatrour, Head of Digital Library Services at the University of Utah, manages programs in Operations, Utah Digital Newspapers, Digital Preservation, and Digital Initiatives and Metadata. Myntti, Associate University Librarian for Metadata and IT at Brigham Young University, is responsible for the administration of the library’s cataloging, metadata, archival processing, IT operations, software engineering, and user experience units. He has worked on digital library projects at multiple academic institutions and a library vendor for over 20 years. As the Digital Curation Librarian at the University of Utah, Wittmann creates metadata for digital collections and develops digital exhibits that document historic and current events in Utah. Cummings is the Digital Matters Interim Director at the University of Utah. In her role, she coordinates digital scholarship activities between the Marriott Library, College of Humanities, College of Fine Arts, College of Architecture and Planning, and School for Cultural and Social Transformation. As the Digital Collections Librarian at the Oregon Historical Society, Monson focuses on the development, description, and promotion of the organization’s digital collections. She previously spent 15 years as an academic librarian, coordinating digital library efforts at institutions in Missouri and Colorado. McMillan is pursuing a Master of Public Administration at Brigham Young University. She worked on research projects regarding cataloging, IT, and digital libraries at the BYU Library during her undergraduate education.

The former Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), the Library Information Technology Association (LITA), and the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) are now Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures, a new division of 91��ý. Its mission is to cultivate and amplify the collective expertise of library workers in core functions through community building, advocacy, and learning.

Having a personal website is a great way for consultants or speakers to market their services and develop a portfolio of past work; for researchers and scholars to share their publications, including archiving for green open access; for public intellectuals to write blog posts and direct readers to their other writings; and for creatives to highlight their work in various formats and media. This four-part webinar series will provide a basic foundation to get a personal website started and develop the skills to continue building and maintaining your site. The webinars will revolve around Quarto and GitHub Pages: Quarto makes publishing websites simple while providing a lot of customizability for users interested in going deeper, and GitHub Pages allows users to publish their websites for free.

CHICAGO–Core is pleased to announce the release of the 2025 Core Fundamentals Web Course schedule. This series of related online courses covers basic topics that enhance skills in various areas of library work.

The Fundamentals Web Courses focus on the following areas: fundamentals of acquisitions, cataloging, metadata, collection assessment, collection development and management, digital library projects, electronic resources acquisitions, preservation, management, universal design for learning, and institutional repositories.

Courses are 4 to 6 weeks in length and are repeated throughout the year. Students have 24/7 access to the course material. Instructors moderate live weekly chat discussions and provide instruction. Seats are limited and sessions often sell out in advance. Reserve your spot now.

Course Information

Description:

This 6-week online course is an introduction to fundamental concepts of institutional repositories (IR), including considering IR platforms, promoting the IR, faculty publications in the IR, additional sources of IR content, IR metadata, and accessibility of IR content.

This six-week course is an introduction to fundamental concepts of metadata, including:

Similarities and differences between cataloging and metadata
Descriptive, technical, and administrative metadata schema
Content standards and controlled vocabularies
Approaches to metadata creation and transformation
Metadata project design

2025 Sessions

Format:

Students receive a registration confirmation after registering. In the registration confirmation students will receive an access code for the course. After using your access code, students will be able to view and start participating in the course. Students have 24/7 access to the course site for the six-week period, and aside from assignment and quiz deadlines, the course may be completed at their own pace. Instructors provide guidance and feedback as students work their way through the course material. Weekly, instructor-moderated Zoom sessions are the only live course events that students are asked to attend.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course, attendees will be able to:

Identify different types of repository platforms and the features and components they offer
Develop strategies and methods for promoting the institutional repository to their campus community
Understand how to interpret publication agreements, particularly with regard to understanding reuse rights or guidelines for repository deposit of published materials
Comprehend best practices for metadata and create original metadata records for repository content
Evaluate a variety of content types appropriate for inclusion in an institutional repository, and consider diverse strategies for using the repository to meet the scholarly needs of the campus community
Identify best practices for making repository content fully accessible and develop workflows for remediating inaccessible repository content

Who Should Attend:

Primarily IR managers, especially those new to IRs, but the course will also be useful for reference librarians, metadata librarians, special collections librarians at institutions where archival materials are stored in the IR, and anyone involved with IR initiatives.

Tech Requirements

A Moodle-developed site is composed of self-paced modules with facilitated interaction led by the instructors. There are predetermined start and end dates and a suggested pace which include interaction with the instructors and your classmates. Students regularly use the forum and chat room functions to facilitate their class participation. Section quizzes are offered and feedback given, however, there is no final class grade.

The course website will be open for 1 week prior to the start date for students to have access to Moodle instructions and set their browser correctly. It will remain open 1 week after the end date for students to complete any sections and submit the course evaluation survey.

Contact Hours - 24 hours

Core defines contact hours in line with the IACET standards on Continuing Education Units.

Certificates of completion are sent upon successful completion (passing score of 70% or higher) of the course.
