Engaging, community, innovative.

What do you value about ACRL?

My favorite thing about ACRL is the communities of practice, especially as a librarian fairly new to the field. I've learned a lot by connecting with people through ACRL and through its many publications that I always look forward to. The people that make up this organization are passionate about the open exchange of ideas and information, advocacy, and collaboration, which is inspiring to me both professionally and personally.

What do you as an academic librarian contribute to your campus?

As Collection Development Librarian, I support UAB's programs in the non-health sciences (we have another Collection Development Librarian for that!) by ensuring our collections meet and exceed their needs and continually evolve to anticipate their needs in the future. My goal is for our collections to support and reflect our UAB community in relevant, inclusive, and innovative ways.

In your own words

There is so much room for growth and innovation in academic librarianship and in ACRL. It is a difficult but also rewarding time to be a librarian, and it is a privilege to have such a strong community of practitioners to connect with!

Kent County Public Library to receive 2024 Citation for Wellness in the Workplace

CHICAGO - Kent County Public Library is honored for its commitment to wellness as a strategic priority, earning the 2024 Citation for Wellness in the Workplace.

Over the past three years, the Kent County Public Library has increased their staff levels, ensured increasing compensation, and prioritized team building at the organizational level. In considering the holistic well-being of their staff, they have added more personal leave and leave for professional development, added more leave use categories, implemented initiatives like “Early Release Fridays” during the summer, and developed a telework policy. The intentional initiatives and policies supported by their leadership in recent years have improved staff’s work-life balance and encouraged professional development.

These developments and more showcase the Kent County Public Library’s enduring dedication to the overall well-being of its employees. SustainRT acknowledges the profound impact of integrating wellness practices into policy and applauds the culture of wellness that the Kent County Public Library is fostering in its workplace through this citation.

91��ý Sustainability Round Table opens nominations for wellness citation

CHICAGO – The 91��ý’s Sustainability Round Table (SustainRT) is accepting nominations for its Citation for Wellness in the Workplace award. The citation recognizes libraries that go above and beyond in meeting the wellness needs of their staff, acknowledging that library staff are the greatest assets in building and supporting sustainable libraries and communities.

All 91��ý members are invited to nominate any library who has made efforts to meet the needs of their staff in the areas of continuing education, wellness, positive work environment, unions, salaries, gender equity, pay equity initiatives, and other activities designed to improve the salaries and status of librarians and other library workers. The call for nominations is open now through March 15, 2024.

The SustainRT Citation for Wellness in the Workplace was initiated by 91��ý past president Loida Garcia-Ferbo in 2019 as the 91��ý Presidential Citation for Wellness in the Workplace and Sustain RT continues that legacy of recognition.

SustainRT will honor the winning library or organization with a plaque recognizing their efforts to promote wellness during the) 2024 91��ý Annual Conference at the SustainRT Membership Meeting or at the virtual SustainRT Membership Meeting in May 2024.

SustainRT is seeking nominees to stand for Spring 2023 election for the roles of Coordinator-Elect and Member-at-Large (see position descriptions below). If you see a sustainable future with libraries leading the way, a leadership position in SustainRT offers a remarkable way for you to realize that vision. As one of the fastest growing roundtables in 91��ý, SustainRT is currently working on multiple initiatives as part of a strategic plan that challenges and supports 91��ý, our profession, our own libraries, and ourselves to live and work in more sustainable ways. Can you picture yourself helping to shepherd this work along? Nominees must complete and submit a nomination form by December 15th, 2022. Coordinator-Elect: The Coordinator-elect will be elected for a three-year term and serves one year of that term as Coordinator-elect, one year as Coordinator, and one year as Immediate Past Coordinator. The Coordinator-elect shall appoint the chair of each standing committee and members to fill vacancies in such committees for terms beginning their year as Coordinator, except the Nominating Committee.

The Coordinator-elect is expected to attend the 91��ý Annual Conference, and LibLearnX if a membership meeting is planned for the roundtable. The following year, as Coordinator, duties will include leading and convening monthly Steering Committee meetings and working towards completing goals identified in the SustainRT strategic plan. The Past-coordinator, will be expected to convene the nominating committee to find candidates for upcoming leadership positions, and maintain and update procedure documentation relevant to SustainRT’s work. Member-at-Large: The Member-at-Large position is a two-year commitment, including attending monthly SustainRT Steering Committee Meetings. The Member-at-Large will serve as liaison between the Steering Committee and a SustainRT committee, and work on special projects as assigned by the Steering Committee or the Coordinator. Members at Large are expected to attend either the LibLearnX conference or the 91��ý Annual Conference.

Call for SustainRT New Voices in Sustainability Conference Stipend Nominations

CHICAGO - The Sustainability Round Table will offer a $500 conference stipend to a SustainRT member attending the 2023 91��ý Annual Conference. Applicants should be new and diverse voices in library sustainability or first-time attendees.

The SustainRT New Voices in Sustainability Conference Stipend recognizes the importance of social equity to SustainRT and 91��ý, and works to support new and diverse members to overcome barriers to participating in the professional development and networking opportunities presented by 91��ý conferences and events. SustainRT will provide up to $500 each year to help one candidate to attend the 91��ý Annual Conference through the stipend which can be used for fees associated with registration, housing, meals, travel, or any other costs incurred as a result of attending the in-person or virtual conference.

Prospective applicants may add the SustainRT to their membership by logging in through their 91��ý Connect account.

The requirements for the award winner are that they must:

Attend the 2023 91��ý Annual Conference
Be a current SustainRT member. (Current SustainRT board members are not eligible.)
Brief bio (up to 250 words)
A statement on the role of diversity in promoting sustainability in libraries (up to 500 words).
Entries are due by February 15, 2023. The winner will be notified in March and recognized at the Sustain RT member meeting at the 91��ý Annual conference. The award recipient will be invited to serve on the SustainRT Awards Committee following the conference.

SustainRT Awards the 2022 Citation for Wellness in the Workplace to Health and Safety Department at Queens Public Library

SustainRT has awarded the 2022 Citation for Wellness in the Workplace to the Health and Safety Department at Queens Public Library for their commitment to promoting the physical and mental well-being of their library workers. The library's program was designed to increase employee’s health awareness and focus on prevention of disease to sustain a healthier workforce. By adding expertise from medical, health, and social care professionals to its staff, the department expanded programs with a focus on promoting mental health and wellness.

In 2020 as the library responded to the pandemic, the Queens Public Library Health and Safety department not only developed protocols to keep employees physically safe, but also recognized the impact on mental health, and responded with a range of virtual programs and resources that library workers could use as they worked remotely. Employees were provided time and incentives to participate in virtual programs, such as webinars, wellness “challenges”, and supportive groups. They also created a newsletter that continues to share articles and information about health, safety, and wellness. Since returning to in-person library work, the department has added staff and programs for health screenings, nutrition, and wellness checks. They continue to seek out new opportunities to promote wellness in their workplace, and SustainRT is pleased to recognize their efforts.

The Citation for Wellness in the Workplace carries on the work begun by 91��ý Past President Loida Garcia-Febo with her Presidential Citation for Wellness in the Workplace, and recognizes the importance of promoting wellness of library professionals as part of a sustainable library community.

A Call to Action on Climate Change for Libraries

CHICAGO – Climate change is the single greatest threat to global health and this generation’s grandest challenge, but many library leaders feel overwhelmed, even paralyzed about where to start. “Sustainability in Libraries: A Call to Action,” a new briefing from the 91��ý Council Committee on Sustainability, is here to focus attention on how the library community can accelerate their understanding and action, in the areas of climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Readers will learn:

Why 91��ý has adopted the “triple bottom line” definition of sustainability as a core value of the profession;
How libraries can take the lead on climate adaptation;
Why climate justice work is equity, diversity, and inclusion work;
How many in our field are already answering the call for leadership on the topic of sustainability;
How 91��ý, as an association, is living its values out loud on this topic; and
Simple, practical steps anyone can take to get started.

91��ý President Patty Wong focused on sustainability during her presidential year, noting in her kickoff American Libraries column about this topic, “This is the time to stand together in solidarity…to meet the enormous challenges of the climate crisis and summon the effort to deal with its impact. Climate change is a unifying issue for libraries across the globe, and we must commit to doing all we can to prepare our communities for its effects.”

The authors of the briefing, members of the new 91��ý Council Committee on Sustainability, represent public, school and academic libraries and have strong ties to the 91��ý Special Task Force on Sustainability, the Sustainability Round Table, the Sustainable Libraries Initiative and the Executive Board of 91��ý.

Colleen Murphy-Dunning is the Program Director at the Urban Resources Initiative (URI), a not-for-profit university partnership based at the Hixon Center for Urban Ecology, and a Lecturer in Urban and Community Forestry at the Yale School of the Environment. Faculty, staff, and students can significantly contribute to local environmental conditions. The Urban Resources Initiative (URI) at the Yale School of the Environment has worked in close partnership with the City of New Haven and New Haven residents to address local environmental concerns that they have identified. Colleen will describe some of URI’s projects to address community-led environmental priorities and offer Yale students' valuable learning opportunities.
