My role has been pivotal in fostering a learning culture and promoting the effective use of information resources in multiple disciplines, such as English, Speech, History, Government, and Biology. </p> <p>As an embedded librarian, I deeply integrate into user communities to understand students’ needs and provide prompt support. In the case of the online learning environment at El Paso Community College, I would be deeply embedded in the Learning Management System (LMS) Blackboard online platform with teaching faculty. I provide tailored online information literacy instruction and assignments, reference services, and other online support. It has been an advancing project, and to this day, some instructional faculty have redesigned their courses to include information literacy assignments and an embedded librarian. A history faculty even included a graded essay assignment to have students reflect on the library research process for their History Research as an opportunity to reflect on what they learned, recognize their achievements, and identify their challenges. The Texas Library Association recognized these efforts as the Library Instruction Project of the Year (2018). Currently, this model is being expanded to be implemented district-wide. </p> <p>Additionally, I am always writing grants to bring new literacy and information technology opportunities to our patrons and active in various professional associations and committees related to emerging technologies, academic libraries, and library instruction to bring new ideas to our community or serve as a resource for challenging situations. In addition to these roles, I also embrace the role of trailblazer, assertively pursuing headship positions in strategic institutional initiatives. During the pandemic, I took the lead in transitioning our face-to-face reference services for all five campuses to online virtual assistance, as we did not have virtual reference services before the pandemic, and supported librarians in transitioning to online library instruction. I love my job and am always up for a challenge to lead change, assume increased responsibility within my professional environment, or bring innovative ideas to strengthen library services and instruction at my campus or district-wide. </p> </body> </html></div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-own-words field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">In your own words</div> <div class="field__item"> <html><body><p>Being an academic/research librarian is like being a lighthouse in the vast ocean of knowledge. Each day, I guide students and faculty through the waves of information, helping them navigate toward the shores of understanding. The joy of seeing a student’s face light up when they find the perfect source for their research or a faculty member appreciating a newly acquired resource is immeasurable. Yet, it’s not just about the books and databases; it’s about fostering a culture of curiosity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Every question answered, every class taught, and every collection curated adds a brick to our institution's edifice of knowledge. Despite the challenges, the rapid pace of technological change, the constant need for upskilling, and the pressure of budget constraints - the rewards of empowering others with information make every day a fulfilling journey. Reflecting on my academic librarian role, I realize that I am not just a custodian of books but a beacon of learning, illuminating the path for others to follow for success. I oversee a dual mission library, public and academic, and having the opportunity to also work on early childhood literacy gives me the opportunity to instill information literacy and lifelong learning at an early age.</p> </body> </html></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-sign-off field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Sign Off</div> <div class="field__item">On</div> </div> Tue, 04 Jun 2024 21:56:57 +0000 LAMBRIZ@EPCC.EDU 60568 at Samantha Peter chosen as the 2024 recipient of the LIRT Librarian Recognition Award /news/2024/03/samantha-peter-chosen-2024-recipient-lirt-librarian-recognition-award <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Samantha Peter chosen as the 2024 recipient of the LIRT Librarian Recognition Award</span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"> <html><body><p>CHICAGO — The Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) of the 91ý has chosen Samantha Peter, Chair of Research &amp; Instruction and Instructional Design Librarian at the University of Wyoming Libraries, as the 2024 recipient of the LIRT Librarian Recognition Award. The award was created to recognize an individual’s contribution to the development, advancement and support of information literacy and instruction.</p> <p>Peter received her Master of Science in Information Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin in 2018. Shortly after graduation, she began working at the University of Wyoming Libraries as the Instructional Design Librarian. In 2022, she took on a greater leadership role within the libraries, serving as Chair of Research &amp; Instruction. In that position, she is responsible for supervising six library faculty and managing information literacy at the university. Throughout her career, Peter has been an advocate for universal design for learning, employing its tenets in her instruction and educating other librarians on how to incorporate universal design in their teaching.</p> <p>Peter has numerous presentations and publications centering on instruction focusing on inclusive pedagogy, digital literacy badging, and open educational resources. Most notable is Peter’s research on universal design for learning for library instruction classes. In addition to her scholarship in this area, she has taught several Library Juice Academy’s Inclusive Instructional Design Course which has allowed her to share best practices and principles of accessibility and universal design with others in the profession.</p> <p>Peter has been active in service to the profession, focusing her work in this area on her passion for making libraries more accessible to our patrons and colleagues. She has served as an editor for the Journal of Open Educational Resources in Higher Education and a member of the Society of American Archivists Task Force on Revising the Best Practices of Accessibility. The awards committee was most impressed by her dedication—as evidenced by her work experience, research, and service—to creating more open, inclusive, and accessible spaces for all library patrons.</p> <p>In response to learning of the award, Peter said, "Receiving the LIRT Librarian Recognition Award is an incredible honor, and I am thrilled to join the ranks of past recipients. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has been a core pedagogy through my work supporting students, faculty, and staff. UDL helps me understand that everyone processes information differently and it can be so simple to make little changes that allow for everyone to learn on equal levels. I am thankful to be surrounded by a supportive team at the University of Wyoming who have always encouraged my ideas and work together to advance information literacy and instruction for all students in the state of Wyoming.”</p> <p>The Library Instruction Round Table was started in 1977 with the intent to bring together librarians who provide library instruction across all types of libraries–academic, public, school, and special. 2024 marks the 11th year the Librarian Recognition Award has been awarded. Samantha Peter will be presented with a $1,000 cash prize and a plaque commemorating the award. She will be honored during a ceremony at the 91ý Annual Conference in San Diego, tentatively scheduled for Sunday, June 30, at 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.</p> <p>Visit <a href="/rt/lirt">LIRT's webpage</a> to find out more about LIRT, its mission, and the awards.</p> <p>The LIRT Librarian Recognition Awards Subcommittee included Bridget Farrell of the University of Denver (chair), Alex Mitchell of Texas A&amp;M University, Brian Richardson of University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, and Monica Latham of Colorado State University.</p> <p><strong>ABOUT AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION</strong><br>The 91ý (91ý) is the foremost national organization providing resources to inspire library and information professionals to transform their communities through essential programs and services. The award is given to libraries that exhibit innovative and cost-effective library instruction programs and/or methods that can be readily reproduced by other libraries. The award committee selected Randall Library at UNCW because of its creative and approach to first-year information literacy instruction program, which employs scenario-based learning along with high impact practices. The modules developed as a part of the program are adaptable by other libraries and are shared with the community via Canvas Commons. </p> <p>In reaction to receiving the award, Information Literacy Librarian Brittany O’Neill, the lead on the team’s project, said, “We are deeply honored to receive the LIRT Innovation in Instruction Award. This project builds on the work of many others who have shaped information literacy instruction at UNCW. I am proud of how my colleagues in Randall Library, Distance Education and eLearning, and University College came together to address the needs of our students and instructors in new ways. The feedback we have received thus far has shown that these course-integrated lesson plans are timely, impactful, and adaptable. Our collaboration demonstrates the benefits of shared responsibility for information literacy, and we are excited to share this project with others to impact student success beyond our campus. We acknowledge the competitiveness of this award and are humbled by the recognition.” </p> <p>LIRT was started in 1977 with the intent to bring together librarians who provide library instruction across all types of libraries–academic, public, school, and special. 2024 marks the 11th year the Librarian Recognition Award has been awarded. Created to recognize a library that demonstrates innovation in support of information literacy and instruction, this year’s award recognizes Baylor University Libraries’ information literacy syllabi miner project, a large-scale automated curriculum mapping project.</p> <p>Developed by Amy James (Director of Instruction and Information Literacy), Joshua Been (Director of Data and Digital Scholarship), and Beth Farwell (Director of Arts and Special Collections Research), the objective of the project was to use text-data mining to find information literacy related terms and phrases within syllabi to help locate new opportunities to provide support to faculty and instructors through information literacy instruction as well as increase instructional outreach and awareness across campus.</p> <p>Amy James shared the following statement upon learning about the award: “Winning the LIRT Innovation in Instruction Award is a massive accomplishment and honor. My colleagues, Joshua Been and Beth Farwell, have been integral in helping make our information literacy syllabi miner tool useful, effective, and impactful. This tool started off as a dream of mine about two years ago and with the expertise and skills of my colleagues, we were able to turn this dream into a reality. Using it to grow our instruction program here at Baylor has been phenomenal. But, seeing it come into fruition and be used by other campus libraries across the country has been especially rewarding. We are excited to share this open-source tool with everyone so that campus libraries across the world can use it to find opportunities for information literacy instruction at their institutions and reach more students, sharing with them the important skills that they need to navigate the information environment that exists in today’s world.”</p> <p>And it’s their commitment to making the project open-source and their willingness to support other libraries using the tool that set the Baylor University Libraries team apart among a number of outstanding nominations for the 2022 Innovation in Instruction Award. The development of the information literacy syllabi miner provides other libraries with the ability to upload their syllabi (or other assignments) into the open-source Jupyter notebook and analyze the content to assess their own instructional programs.</p> <p>The Library Instruction Round Table was started in 1977 with the intent to bring together librarians who provide library instruction across all types of libraries–academic, public, school, and special. 2022 marks the ninth year the Innovation in Instruction Award has been awarded. The Baylor University Libraries will be presented with a $1,000 cash prize and a plaque commemorating the award. Their achievement will be celebrated at a ceremony during the 91ý Annual Conference in June 2022 (date and time to be announced).</p> <p>Find out <a href="http://www.ala.org/lirt/mission">more about LIRT</a>, its mission, and the awards.</p> <p>The LIRT Innovation in Instruction Awards Subcommittee included Wayne Finley of Northern Illinois University (co-chair), Bridget Farrell of the University of Denver, and Maria Sclafani of Wichita State University.</p> </body> </html></div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>DALDERSON</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2022-03-15T16:11:14-05:00" title="Tuesday, March 15, 2022 - 16:11" class="datetime">Tue, 03/15/2022 - 16:11</time> </span> <div class="inline-block mr-[1.125rem] mb-5 px-12 py-[1.125rem] font-urw text-xs rounded-lg border border-[#ADCEDA] bg-transparent text-[#101828] font-bold uppercase"><a href="/taxonomy/term/555" hreflang="en">Awards (Professional Recognition)</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-contact-information field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--contact-information paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="flex justify-center my-9 lg:my-[3.125rem] px-[1.25rem]"> <div class="max-w-[356px] bg-[#EEF5F7] font-urw px-5 py-[30px] text-center text-[15px] w-full"> <p class="font-bold uppercase">Contact:</p> <p class="text-[15px]">Wayne Finley</p> <p class="mb-0">Chair, Innovation in Instruction Award</p> <p class="mb-0">Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT)</p> <a class="mb-0 underline hover:no-underline" href="mailto: wfinley@niu.edu">wfinley@niu.edu</a> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-header-content field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--image-gallery paragraph--view-mode--default"> <!-- Slider main container --> <div class="carousel-container wrapper py-[105px] "> <div class="relative lg:max-w-940 mx-auto"> <div class="next-btn absolute"></div> <div class="prev-btn absolute"></div> <div style="--swiper-navigation-color: #fff; --swiper-pagination-color: #fff" class="swiper imageGallery max-w-full lg:max-w-940 mb-3 flex flex-col"> <div class="swiper-wrapper items-center text-center"> <div class="swiper-slide"> <div class="inline-block relative"> <picture> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/image_gallery_md/public/news/news/pressreleaseimages/2022%20Baylor%20Group%20Photo.jpg.webp?itok=VJfvqVsI 1x" media="all and (min-width: 768px)" type="image/webp" width="726" height="480"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/image_gallery_sm/public/news/news/pressreleaseimages/2022%20Baylor%20Group%20Photo.jpg.webp?itok=x_fVJXd7" alt="2022 Baylor University Group Photo" title="2022 Baylor University Group Photo"> </picture> <a aria-label="download image" class="absolute block bottom-[1.12rem] right-[1.12rem] z-20" href="/sites/default/files/news/news/pressreleaseimages/2022%20Baylor%20Group%20Photo.jpg" download><svg width="40" height="40" viewBox="0 0 40 40" fill="none"> <circle cx="20" cy="20" r="20" fill="#101828" /> <path d="M11.0625 30C10.5125 30 10.0313 29.7938 9.61875 29.3813C9.20625 28.9688 9 28.4875 9 27.9375V23.0219H11.0625V27.9375H28.9375V23.0219H31V27.9375C31 28.4875 30.7938 28.9688 30.3813 29.3813C29.9688 29.7938 29.4875 30 28.9375 30H11.0625ZM20 24.7406L13.3656 18.1063L14.8438 16.6281L18.9688 20.7531V8H21.0313V20.7531L25.1563 16.6281L26.6344 18.1063L20 24.7406Z" fill="white" /> </svg> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Tue, 15 Mar 2022 21:11:14 +0000 DALDERSON 28066 at Sara Lowe chosen as the 2022 recipient of the LIRT Librarian Recognition Award /news/2022/03/sara-lowe-chosen-2022-recipient-lirt-librarian-recognition-award <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Sara Lowe chosen as the 2022 recipient of the LIRT Librarian Recognition Award</span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"> <html><body><p>CHICAGO — The <a href="http://www.ala.org/rt/lirt">Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT)</a> of the 91ý has chosen Sara Lowe, associate librarian at IUPUI University Library, as the 2022 recipient of the LIRT Librarian Recognition Award. The Librarian Recognition Award was created to recognize an individual’s contribution to the development, advancement and support of information literacy and instruction.</p> <p>Lowe began her library career at Metropolitan Community College-Longview and is the former assessment officer for the Claremont University Consortium. Since 2015, she has been a tenured librarian at IUPUI University Library, where she is currently the associate dean of educational services. She has been the principal investigator on many funded grant projects, including Peer Teaching for Information Literacy, What do our students know? Measuring Students’ Information Literacy Skills and the Impact of Faculty/Librarian Collaboration, and Undergraduate Course to Train Near-Peer Teachers in Subject Embedded Information Literacy Instruction.</p> <p>She has numerous presentations and publications on instruction, assessment, information literacy, and student learning, including <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.acalib.2020.102234">an article published in The Journal of Academic Librarianship</a> that was selected as one of LIRT’s Top Twenty Articles for 2020 and <a href="https://doi.org/10.5860/crl.81.3.492">an article published in College &amp; Research Libraries</a> that was selected by ACRL’s Instruction Section/Teaching Methods Committee to be included on the List of Selected Resources. Her service to the profession has been significant, including her role as a curriculum designer for ACRL’s Assessment in Action Roadshow, and the 2019-2020 President of Indiana University Libraries Association, among many others. The Awards Committee made particular note of her excellent research during the pandemic, her commitment to being a mentor, the strength of her nomination letters, which praised the impact of her work, and her dedication to the profession.</p> <p>In response to learning of the award, Lowe shared the following statement: "I’m honored that the committee selected me as the recipient of the 2022 LIRT Librarian Recognition Award. The criteria for the award is very meaningful to me, that it is “given to acknowledge a practicing librarian's contribution to the development, advancement, and support of information literacy and instruction.” So much of my career in academic librarianship has involved information literacy and teaching information literacy competencies to students. To me, it is one of the most important aspects of critical thinking in preparing students to navigate not only their academic careers but also their lives after graduation. Additionally, I’ve had the pleasure of working with so many other amazing librarians in this area – that I’m honestly humbled by the fact that my efforts were recognized by the committee."</p> <p>The Library Instruction Round Table was started in 1977 with the intent to bring together librarians who provide library instruction across all types of libraries–academic, public, school, and special. 2022 marks the ninth year the Librarian Recognition Award has been awarded.
