IFRT Opens Nominations for 2025 John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award

The Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) is accepting nominations for the 2025 John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award, which honors notable contributions to intellectual freedom and demonstrations of personal courage in defense of freedom of expression.

For more information on criteria of the award, past recipients, or to submit a nomination (self-nominations are accepted), please visit the visit the John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award page. The deadline for submitting a nomination is March 1, 2025.

John Phillip Immroth was a teacher, author, scholar, advocate, and defender of First Amendment rights. He was the founder and first chair of the Intellectual Freedom Round Table in 1973. Established upon Immroth’s death in 1979, the award honors the courage, dedication, and contribution of a living individual, group, or organization that has set the finest kind of example for the defense and furtherance of the principles of intellectual freedom.

The award winner will be announced in the spring of 2025. IFRT will present the award during the 2025 91��ý Annual Conference in Philadelphia. The award consists of a certificate of recognition and $500 cash award.

The Immroth Award is administered by the John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award Committee, which includes Eldon Ray James, chair; Michael Blackwell; Matthew Good, Kristin Pekoll; and Samuel Rumore.

IFRT Seeks Nominations for the 2025 Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award

The Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) Coalition Building Committee is accepting nominations for the 2025 Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award.

This award consists of a citation and $1,000, which will be presented at the 2025 91��ý Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The award is sponsored by the Intellectual Freedom Round Table of the 91��ý (91��ý). An online nomination form and printable PDF nomination form are available. The deadline for nominations is February 1, 2025.

The Gerald Hodges Award recognizes an intellectual freedom-focused organization that has developed a strong multi-year, ongoing program or a single, one-year project that exemplifies support for intellectual freedom, patron confidentiality and anti-censorship efforts. Do you know of a state chapter or organization that has:

bravely defended the freedom to read or access to information;
successfully promoted intellectual freedom issues;
or demonstrated exemplary coalition-building efforts?

Past recipients include the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association (2024), the Michigan Library Association (2023), and the Tennessee Library Association & the Tennessee Association of School Librarians (2022). The award is named after Gerald Hodges, who joined the 91��ý staff in 1989 as director of membership services and the Chapter Relations Office. Hodges was the associate director of communications and marketing at his death in 2006, but intellectual freedom and chapter relations were still his passions. A charter member of the 91��ý Legacy Society, he willed a portion of his estate to support 91��ý's intellectual freedom efforts. Memorial contributions in recognition of Hodges came from many friends, colleagues and 91��ý chapters following the establishment of the Gerald Hodges Fund.

IFRT Seeks Nominations for the Eli M. Oboler Award

The Intellectual Freedom Round Table is seeking book nominations for the 2025 Eli M. Oboler Memorial Award.

The award winner will be announced in the spring of 2025. A certificate of recognition and $500 cash award will be presented at the 2025 91��ý Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The deadline for nominations is January 2, 2025.

The Oboler Award honors a literary work or series of works in the area of intellectual freedom. This can include matters of ethical, political, or social concerns related to intellectual freedom. The award recognizes journal articles in even number years (2022, 2024, etc.) and honors books in odd number years (2023, 2025, etc.).

Books for 2025 award consideration should have been published on the local, state, or national level in English or English translation in the 2023 or 2024 calendar years, through the end of December 2024.

I'm currently swaying between working through the Broken Earth series by N.K. Jemisin and the Eisenhorn series by Dan Abnett.

Describe ACRL in three words:

Direction, community, caring.

What do you value about ACRL?

There is a lot that I can say about what and how much I value the work of the ACRL community. I feel it forms an important part of the foundation of our profession, and it’s pretty amazing. I have met so many passionate and caring people throughout my time in ACRL. As I’m writing this, I can’t help but keep replaying this great memory of my very first 91��ý conference. As a brand-new librarian, I was struggling to connect and find a professional community. I ended up sitting in on the STS Scholarly Communication committee’s meeting that first morning of the conference and I immediately felt welcomed. I met so many wonderful people. I think what keeps pulling me back to that story right now is knowing I will be finishing my third term on that same committee in just a few short weeks.

What do you as an academic librarian contribute to your campus?

I think of myself as an advocate, trying to play some small part to improve lives and outcomes for our students and faculty and help contribute to building a healthy and sustainable scholarly communication environment. I’m a resource and an educator on topics like open access, copyright, publishing, journal and textbook markets, open educational resources, and some data management. I’m also the coordinator for the institution's digital repository, with a focus on helping support our electronic theses and dissertations program, and I’m the journal and conference publishing coordinator for New Prairie Press, the Libraries’ open access publishing imprint.

In your own words

Being a librarian, and in the role that I am in, has been both the most rewarding and the most challenging experience of my life so far. I have been through the high peaks, low valleys, and most everything in-between. It's been quite the ride. I never would have guessed what I'd be doing or where I'd be when I started my librarianship journey, but I feel like I'm right where I'm supposed to be and I'm incredibly grateful for that opportunity.

91��ý announces 2024 recipients of distinguished library Intellectual Freedom Awards

CHICAGO – The Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) of the 91��ý (91��ý) is pleased to announce the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association (PSLA) as the recipient of the 2024 Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award; Matthew Good as the recipient of the 2024 John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award; and Hannah Natanson as the recipient of the 2024 Eli M. Oboler Memorial Award.

The awards will be presented at the 91��ý Annual Conference in San Diego during the 2nd annual Rally for the Right to Read for conference attendees. The program begins at 8:00 p.m., and the evening will honor those who defend and advocate for the freedom to read. A pre-rally reception with a cash bar and light hors d’oeuvres will be held from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

The Pennsylvania School Librarians Association is awarded the 2024 Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award by the IFRT Coalition Building Committee. The committee was impressed by the PSLA Intellectual Freedom Task Group’s (IFTG) multifaceted contribution to intellectual freedom and critical support of library staff facing intimidation and pressure related to anti-censorship efforts. "Without the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association’s Intellectual Freedom Task Group, I am not sure where I would be today," wrote one librarian. Among their many accomplishments in 2023, PSLA IFTG launched a new intellectual freedom website, as well as the IFTG rapid response team. They serve as a member of the steering committee for Pennsylvanians Welcoming and Inclusive Schools (PA-WInS) and collaborate with other organizations. Through coalition building and collaborative engagement, PSLA IFTG has provided outstanding professional support, advocacy, and education on issues pertaining to intellectual freedom.

The award is named after Gerald Hodges and consists of $1,000 and a citation. Hodges joined the 91��ý staff in 1989 as director of membership services and the Chapter Relations Office. At the time of his death in 2006, Hodges was the associate director of communications and marketing. Intellectual freedom and chapter relations were his passions.

Members of the Coalition Building Committee are chair Matthew Sylvain, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth; Leanne Cheek, Pioneer Library System; Cynthia Dudenhoffer, University of Missouri; and Cyndi Robinson, Illinois Library Association.

The 2024 John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award, which honors notable contributions to intellectual freedom and demonstrations of personal courage in defense of freedom of expression, is awarded to Matthew Good, an instructional technology librarian from Pennsylvania. Faced with a difficult decision regarding the implementation of a policy that restricted access to books in the junior high library at the start of the 2022–23 school year, Good resigned his position to bring the issue to light. Good continues to speak out for intellectual freedom and access to books and school libraries.

The annual award consists of a citation and $500 and is named for John Phillip Immroth, a teacher, author, scholar, advocate, defender of First Amendment rights, and the founder and first chair of the Intellectual Freedom Round Table in 1973.

Members of the John Phillip Immroth Committee are chair Wanda Mae Huffaker, Salt Lake County Library; Michael Blackwell, St Mary’s County Library; Kristin Pekoll, Illinois Library Association; and Samuel Rumore, Birmingham Public Library.

Hannah Natanson, a reporter covering national K–12 education at The Washington Post, is the recipient of the 2024 Eli M. Oboler Memorial Award for her series of articles “The School Book Wars,” published in 2023. The Oboler Award committee is honoring Natanson’s work for engaging readers, library workers, and the public, as well as bringing national attention to censorship challenges in schools. Her nuanced stories, the depth of research, and outstanding graphics contributed to the broad reach and appeal of the articles. Given the recent increase in organized challenges to materials, the reach of a piece such as Natanson’s plays an important role in humanizing library workers for the general public.

The Eli M. Oboler Award consists of $500 and a citation and is presented annually to a significant published work in the area of intellectual freedom, including matters of ethical, political, or social concerns related to intellectual freedom. The award is named for Eli M. Oboler, the extensively published Idaho State University librarian who championed intellectual freedom and demanded the dismantling of all barriers to freedom of expression.

CHICAGO – The 91��ý Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) is pleased to announce Amanda Jones, as the recipient of the 2023 John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award for notable contributions to intellectual freedom and demonstrations of personal courage in defense of freedom of expression.

Jones, a school librarian in Louisiana, spoke up against censorship and book bans at her local public library, addressing the rights of BIPOC and LGBTQ people, to read ideas and information that was meaningful to them. As a result, she became the target of harassment, slander and threats and was ostracized by her town. She responded with toolkits , a webpage, a citizen alliance, co-founded Louisiana Citizens against Censorship and fought back, gaining national media attention. She is a 22-year educator and a former 7th and 8th grade ELA teacher. She has a Masters +30, is a certified K-12 librarian, certified 1-8 elementary teacher, certified school administrator and certified reading specialist. She is currently the president of the Louisiana Association of School Librarians.

Established in 1979, upon the death of John Phillip Immroth, the Immroth Memorial Award honors notable contributions to intellectual freedom and demonstrations of personal courage in defense of freedom of expression by a living individual, group, or organization. CHICAGO - The Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) of the 91��ý (91��ý) is pleased to announce the Michigan Library Association (MLA) as the recipient of the 2023 Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award.

The award will be presented at Unite Against Book Bans! A Rally for the Right to Read: Uniting for Libraries & Intellectual Freedom at the 91��ý Annual Conference in Chicago, 6:00-8:00pm Thursday, June 22, 2023.

In Spring 2022, MLA's Intellectual Freedom Task Force launched MI Right to Read (pronounced “My Right to Read”) to form a coalition of librarians and concerned citizens with a shared goal of protecting intellectual freedom and responding to censorship attempts.The MI Right to Read initiative currently has 1,500 individuals and over a dozen partner organizations, and their contact list reaches more than 5,000 advocates. MI Right to Read disseminates Michigan news and educational information through its website, contact lists, and social media, providing instructions and materials for promoting the values of intellectual freedom and protecting the freedom to read. Resources available include social media post templates, letters to the editor examples, public speaking scripts and tips, and guidelines on starting a local advocacy group.

MLA’s ongoing initiatives including the MI Right to Read coalition, Intellectual Freedom Toolkit, intellectual freedom messaging center and hotline, advocacy resource fund, free advocacy hours and webinars, and intellectual freedom training for library directors and board members. MLA has shared the structure of the MI Right to Read site with other chapters to build their own pro-library coalitions.

The Hodges Award recognizes an organization that has developed a strong multi-year, ongoing program or a single, one year project that exemplifies support for intellectual freedom, patron confidentiality, and anti-censorship efforts. The award is named after Gerald Hodges, an 91��ý staff member from 1989 to 2006. CHICAGO - The Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) of the 91��ý (91��ý) is pleased to announce Emily J.M. Knox, PhD, MSLIS as the recipient of the 2023 Eli M. Oboler Memorial Award ⁠— which recognizes the best published work in the area of intellectual freedom ⁠— for her book "Foundations of Intellectual Freedom," published in 2022 by 91��ý Neal-Schuman.

Knox is an associate professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her book "Book Banning in 21st Century America" was published by Rowman and Littlefield and is the first monograph in the Beta Phi Mu Scholars Series. She is also the editor of "Trigger Warnings: History, Theory Context" (Rowman and Littlefield) and is co-editor of "Foundations of Information Ethics" (91��ý Neal-Schuman). Her articles have been published in Library Quarterly, Library and Information Science Research, and the Journal of Intellectual Freedom and Privacy. Knox has served on the boards of the Association for Information Science and Technology, Freedom to Read Foundation, and the National Coalition Against Censorship. She received her doctoral degree from the Rutgers University School of Communication and Information. Her master’s degree in library and information science is from the iSchool at Illinois.

The Oboler Award selection committee selected "Foundations of Intellectual Freedom" because of its high literary quality, outstanding references and research, and the importance of its message during what could be described as a period of intellectual freedom crisis. The selection committee agreed that the content is relevant to library workers at libraries and institutions of every kind.

The Eli M. Oboler Memorial Award, which consists of a $500 award and a certificate, will be presented to Knox at the Intellectual Freedom Event at the 91��ý Annual Conference in Chicago.

The award was named for Eli M. Oboler, the extensively published Idaho State University librarian known as a champion of intellectual freedom who demanded the dismantling of all barriers to freedom of expression.
