CHICAGO - The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) announces the publication of "Supporting Diversity through Collection Evaluation, Development, and Weeding: CLIPP #48," compiled and authored by Erika Barber, Julia Bauder, Micki Behounek, Chris Jones, Kayla Reed, and Elizabeth Rodrigues. This new book offers information on and examples for incorporating diversity concerns and policies into collection management practices.

The College Library Information on Policy and Practice (CLIPP) book series from ACRL provides college and small university libraries analysis and examples of library practices and procedures. "Supporting Diversity through Collection Evaluation, Development, and Weeding" contains a thorough literature review and bibliography, analysis and discussion of survey results, and sample library collection development policies; diversity, equity, and justice statements; and a harmful content policy.

There are emerging practices for evaluating collection diversity and for diversifying collections via acquisitions, but the question of how to weed in a way that protects and enhances collection diversity has not been thoroughly explored. "CLIPP #48" provides a comprehensive survey of how diversity-enhancing collection management practices have filtered into the day-to-day work of average small and medium-sized academic libraries and offers replicable models for library workers.

Choice announces the Outstanding Academic Titles of 2024

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Choice Outstanding Academic Titles (OAT) list for 2024 has been announced. This prestigious list, released today, reflects the best scholarly titles reviewed by Choice during the previous calendar year, as chosen by the editors. This year’s list features 438 books and digital resources from 101 publishers.

Bill Mickey, Choice editorial director, remarked, "The OATs represent the best of the thousands of reviews Choice published during the year 2024. Congratulations to the authors, editors, and publishers for producing such amazing works of scholarship."

As in previous years, Choice editors will present a weekly series of “sneak peeks” into the 2024 OAT list, providing an overview of the year’s best academic nonfiction in select subject areas. CHICAGO - The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) announces the publication of "Closing a College Library," edited by Amber Hunt, Elizabeth Ruane, and Stephanie Sopka, offering checklists, sample documents, and effective practices for the immediate needs that arise when a library is facing a merger or closure.

There are a growing number of college closures and mergers in the United States. The reasons vary—sharply declining enrollment numbers, unsustainable endowment drawdowns, accreditation issues—as does the amount of notice stakeholders receive before the closure and the fate of the campus and its resources.

"Closing a College Library" offers firsthand accounts of closing a library from different institutions of higher education, with practical tips, questions to ask yourself as you move through the process, and lessons learned. It covers strategies for preparing the building to rehoming special collections and archives to transferring electronic resources.

There is much unfamiliar work that comes with a closure or merger, work that can happen concurrently with your regular duties and while you’re handling the emotions of your team, students, alumni, faculty, and staff. To conduct a second revision of the Art and Rare Materials (ARM) BIBFRAME ontology extension for the description of art objects, archives, and special collections materials, in collaboration with SAA. The work will build upon the output of the previous revision completed in 2021. The task force will critically examine modeling of aggregates, part-of relationships, and other areas identified as needing further development.

Appointments will be at the discretion of the ACRL President, in consultation with RBMS, with the task force appointed by Winter/Spring 2024/2025. RBMS membership on the task force will consist of up to five members from the RBMS cataloging community.

The ACRL Board of Directors, at its October 24, 2024, ACRL Fall Board Virtual Meeting approved the creation of this task force.

Tasks & Timeline

Review the current ARM v1.0 ontology extension and identify areas needing further development, with a focus on modeling aggregates and part-of relationships
Extend and refine the ARM ontology as appropriate based on the identified areas
Publish an updated version of the ARM ontology extension
Identify long-term strategies for the ongoing maintenance and development of ARM
Work with the Library of Congress and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) to align ARM with the core BIBFRAME ontology and PCC application profiles

We are living in a time of extraordinary change and the world around us is evolving at an unprecedented pace. Transformative shifts are reshaping the landscape of higher education for generations to come. Themed “Democratizing Knowledge, Access, and Opportunities,” ACRL 2025 will be a platform to engage in critical conversations and explore solutions-centered approaches to the challenges facing the profession. The conference will focus on themes like embedded bias, inclusive excellence, and the role of technology. Together, we can build a future where knowledge is accessible to all.

Project Outcome for Academic Libraries 2024 Report

CHICAGO — The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) is pleased to announce the publication of the fiscal year 2024 report for the Project Outcome for Academic Libraries toolkit. Data in this report includes all immediate and follow-up surveys and responses from institutions in the United States and covers the period September 1, 2023 – August 31, 2024. The report is available as a free download from the Project Outcome for Academic Libraries website.

Project Outcome is a free online toolkit designed to help libraries understand and share the impact of essential library programs and services by providing simple surveys and an easy-to-use process for measuring and analyzing outcomes. Participating libraries are also provided with the resources and training support needed to apply their results and confidently advocate for their library’s future. Project Outcome’s standardized surveys allow libraries to aggregate their outcome data and analyze trends by service topic, program type, and over time.
